About Ian
About Me: English, Writing, and Language Tutor I’m a 4th-year linguistics student at Stony Brook University, with a diverse background in English literature, language study, and computational linguistics. I originally majored in English with a focus on classics and literary analysis, but after transferring to Stony Brook, I shifted into linguistics—where I’ve built a solid foundation in phonetics, syntax, and language structure. I’ve been studying Japanese for over 4 years, which gives me a strong understanding of what it’s like to learn a second language—both the technical and emotional challenges. On the technical side, I’ve also worked with Python and natural language processing (NLP), which gives me a modern, data-informed edge when analyzing language and teaching writing. My goal as a tutor is to help students understand the "why" behind the rules, not just memorize them. I teach writing, grammar, and pronunciation in a clear, approachable way, often pulling in linguistics insights and personalized strategies that match each student's background.

Teaching Method & Techniques
I focus on clarity, engagement, and personalization. Whether we’re working on academic writing, pronunciation, or grammar, I break concepts down into manageable parts and connect them to how language works in real life. I bring in tools from my linguistics background—like phonetic transcription, sentence structure analysis, or root-based vocabulary strategies—to help students deeply understand English, not just memorize it.
Typical Lesson Plan
Each session starts with a quick goal-setting check-in:
What are we working on? (Essay? Speaking? Grammar?)
What’s giving you trouble?
Then we go hands-on—editing together, walking through examples, or practicing speaking. I always leave time for reinforcement at the end, whether that’s exercises, feedback, or a short recap to solidify the topic.

I study how language works under the hood. That means I can explain why English behaves the way it does—not just tell you what's "right." I don’t just fix errors—I help students understand them so they can become confident, independent communicators.
