About Carla
I am a licensed special education teacher with a master’s degree in Special Education and over 10 years of experience working with children in elementary and special education settings.
Throughout my career, I have taught students with a wide range of strengths, learning styles, and academic needs in both the United States and international schools. My experience includes elementary classroom teaching, special education, reading intervention, individualized instruction, and supporting students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
I have specialized training in structured literacy and completed the Institute for Multi-Sensory Education (IMSE) Orton-Gillingham Plus course. This training complements my experience helping students strengthen foundational reading skills such as phonemic awareness, phonics, decoding, spelling, fluency, and comprehension.
As a teacher, I believe strong relationships and academic growth go hand in hand. I strive to create a patient, encouraging environment where students feel comfortable making mistakes, asking questions, and taking on challenges. I especially enjoy helping children who have struggled with reading discover that, with the right instruction and support, they are capable of making meaningful progress.
I look forward to partnering with families to help their children become stronger, more confident readers.

Struggling readers make the greatest progress when instruction is explicit, systematic, and encouraging. I tailor our literacy sessions to meet each student’s individual needs. My goal is not only to help students become stronger readers, but also to help them feel more confident and successful when they read.
I specialize in supporting elementary students in grades K–5, including students who have difficulty with phonics, decoding, spelling, reading fluency, and comprehension. As a licensed special education teacher, I also have extensive experience supporting students with learning differences and individualized education needs.
I begin by getting to know each student as a reader and identifying both strengths and areas that need additional support. I use what I learn to plan targeted instruction and adjust our lessons as the student progresses.
A typical lesson may include phonemic awareness and phonics practice, decoding and spelling activities, work with word patterns and multisyllabic words, supported reading for fluency, and comprehension activities. Lessons are interactive and broken into manageable activities to help younger learners stay engaged during online instruction.
I bring both classroom experience and specialized training in structured literacy and reading intervention to my tutoring. I have completed the Institute for Multi-Sensory Education (IMSE) 30-hour Orton-Gillingham Plus course, which strengthened my use of explicit, systematic, multisensory approaches to reading instruction.
I want students to leave our sessions feeling successful. Reading intervention should be challenging enough to help a child grow, but supportive enough that they realize, “I can do this.”
