For all students, I would propose studying via the Cambridge Latin Course. I am not suggesting that this would lead to a GCSE qualification, but this would provide a thorough grounding in the basics of Latin and introduce students to new grammar concepts. My intention is to light a spark which would leave students able to pursue Latin further should they so choose or at least leave them with a basic understanding of Latin which would be helpful in their lifelong learning. Apart from the unalloyed joy of learning Latin for its own immeasurable pleasure, students benefit in many other areas of their learning. Apart from understanding the literal meaning of common phrases such as e.g., p.s., i.e., modus operandi, carpe diem, persona non grata, a.m. / p.m., per unitatem virtus, there is also scope for Sixth Form students to include powerful phrases such as ad hominem arguments, reductio ad absurdum, caveat emptor, quis custodet ipsos custodes?, alia iacta est, lingua franca - as well as understanding the significance of classical references such as crossing the Rubicon and the historic et tu, Brute and veni, vidi, vici. Students studying modern foreign languages or English literature may also enjoy the simple pleasures of etymology, as I myself do. There are myriad examples but nepo baby, preliminary, agriculture, audacious and candidate are just some of the more common.
