About Jo
I'm a recent graduate of the University of Edinburgh's English Literature degree (degree classification not yet known but mathematically can't get less than 2:1). I specialise in contemporary Scottish literature such as Kelman, Gray, Owens, Smith etc., but have interests touching every base you could think of.
The key to my attaining of As at national 5 and higher English and History was likely the passion and enthusiasm I was afforded by the teachers I was so lucky to have. I intend to channel that into my own tutoring style alongside the relatability teenagers can only find in others close to their own age (I remember the struggle of school...). Of course, the actual learning and grade achievement is paramount and so enthusiasm and fun is primarily a slightly cheeky trojan horse for the actual academics of it!
Outside of academia, I'm a music journalist and have recently interviewed artists such as Squid, Arab Strap and Lou Barlow of Dinosaur Jr., for publications like Gold Flake Paint, Secret Meeting and Loud & Quiet. I'm in a post-punk band myself, but we're incredibly uncool as we comprise entirely of slightly nerdy looking lads trying to be cooler than we are. I'm a published writer, recently with Glasgow print The Common Breath, I play football when is safe given the pandemic and have previously been involved in both Mutual Aid projects and volunteer guitar lessons for children through Barnardo's Children's Charity.
As it seems I also make a hobby of typing absurdly long and incoherent bios...
