About Kezheng
My name is Kezheng Song. I hold a bachelor's degree from East China Normal University, one of China’s top universities for teacher education. There, I was immersed in individualized and student-centred teaching methods from early on. In 2021, I obtained my master’s degree in the UK. I'm a native Chinese (Mandarin) speaker, proficient in both modern and classical Chinese.
While I don't have prior experience teaching Chinese to non-native speakers, this allows me to break away from conventional patterns. I innovate based on real student needs and collaborate with learners to explore personalized, meaningful approaches to mastering the language.

Chinese is a language where reading and writing are relatively independent—unlike most European languages, being able to read a word doesn’t mean you can spell or write it. In fact, writing Chinese is less like spelling and more like drawing or assembling with Lego—visual, structural, and symbolic.
Most languages in the world are phonetic, while Chinese is logographic. Its use of tones also makes it quite different from European languages. As a result, jumping straight into pronunciation often leads to confusion and resistance. Furthermore, methods used by native Chinese speakers during childhood are not always transferable to second-language learners, who already think and speak within a different phonetic and mental framework.
That’s why in the early stages, I teach Chinese characters directly in English. We focus on the principles of character formation—understanding how characters are built and how they reflect the real world—rather than trying to learn a new language through another one. This process nurtures “Chinese thinking” and lays a conceptual foundation before introducing pronunciation.
At this stage, the course breaks down essential knowledge—such as the logic of radicals and component structures—so students can understand why a character exists and how it reflects life. Once this understanding is built, learning vocabulary becomes much more intuitive and engaging.
Ultimately, learning Chinese isn’t just about speaking—it’s about understanding the logic behind the language. This, in turn, becomes a key to understanding Chinese culture and the Chinese worldview. That’s what my course values most: not just the “how” of the language, but the “why” behind it.

Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the teacher
As a friend who has known Kezheng for over ten years, I can say he's always been clear and thoughtful in how he expresses himself. He's friendly, patient, and genuinely willing to help others. With his experience living and studying in both China and the UK, and his ability to explain things in a logical and accessible way, I think he's well suited to teaching Chinese—especially for learners who are looking for a different, more thoughtful approach.
