About Patrick
I am a retired English teacher. I taught in Southern California for 30 years, 5 of those years include teaching English and writing at the college level. I also taught English grades 9-12; most were spent teaching AP English to 11th and 12th graders. I have extensive experience in teaching writing to full classes and/or to individuals at all secondary levels. I also have 20 years experience teaching the art of film - comprehension and interpretation.

I would begin with a discussion on what we will attempt to achieve, and how we will go about doing that.
These discussions assume the student understands the form/type of writing being assigned (essay - essay type, research paper, business letter, etc.). If that is not the case, a lesson on form would precede this discussion.
For writing: the purpose is to convince, discover or persuade - as efficiently and effectively as one can.
We would discuss what that means. Then ask, “So, what is YOUR point?” “What idea are you trying to convey? Discuss.
Ascertain, is the student certain of what he/she wants to say? Clarify through discussion or rough draft.
Ask, “Is the idea in your head being made by your writing?” “Is that argument (brief lesson on the term “argument”) convincing?”
Once the central idea has been established, further discussions on thesis will ensue, followed by refinement of organization, diction, syntax, rhythm, and flow.
Most writing, particularly the writing of young students, tends to be a work in progress. Thus, rough drafts, Re-drafts, and rewrites are usually necessary for a quality finished product.
