About David
I am an educator and community-rooted scholar who believes history is most powerful when it helps us see ourselves and our world more clearly. My teaching connects classroom learning with real-world context, drawing on my background in racial justice research, public policy, and community organizing. I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Africana Studies and History from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte with a Minor in Political Science and a Master of Public Affairs from the University of California, Berkeley. For more than a decade, I have worked at the intersections of history, equity, and civic engagement, helping people of all ages build critical thinking skills and a deeper understanding of the world around them. My lessons are guided by curiosity, compassion, and clarity. I meet students where they are, helping them connect ideas across time, geography, and culture. Whether we are studying global empires, freedom movements, or the evolution of public policy, I emphasize how history shapes the struggles and possibilities of today. My goal is to help every learner grow more confident, think more deeply, and see that history is not just something to study; it is something we live.

I teach history through stories, questions, and connections that help students see how the past shapes the world around them. My goal is to make history feel real and meaningful, not just a list of names and dates. Each lesson starts with a big question that links historical events to current issues or personal experiences. From there, we explore maps, primary sources, short readings, and open discussion. I explain key ideas clearly, then guide students to build their own insights and confidence.
What sets my teaching apart is the blend of scholarship and lived experience I bring to every session. My background in racial justice research, community organizing, and policy work allows me to make history engaging and relevant. Students often tell me that after our sessions, they see the world with more curiosity and context. I work with middle and high school students, college undergraduates, and adults at all levels, tailoring each lesson to fit their goals, whether that means preparing for exams, improving writing, or simply exploring history with depth and purpose.
