About Ken
I combine 8 years of competitive debating and adjudication experience with 7 years of coaching experience informed by my time in traditional classrooms where I taught Social Studies and English Language Arts. Previously, I have served as President of the University of Alberta Debate Society and the Vice-President of the Canadian University Society for Intercollegiate Debate.
Debate has taught me an endless amount about learning with others, sharing, and collaborating in order to solve complex problems. I believe that in teaching and helping nurture future debaters, these are the lessons that I am preserving and the legacy that debate represents. No matter the student's skill level, I believe that debate has so much to offer everyone willing to give it a try, and if you give my lessons a try I promise a welcoming, fun, and engaging platform as an introduction to this activity.
Regarding my competitive achievements, I have won the McGoun Western Canadian Championship and made it to the finals of numerous tournaments across Canada. As an adjudicator, I have ranked at the North American University Debate Championship and was awarded Best Judge at the Canadian British Parliamentary Championship. Additionally, I have won two adjudicator of the year awards from the Canadian University Society for Intercollegiate Debate.
My students range from first-time debaters to top-level debaters that attend some of the most prestigious tournaments in the world. Wherever you are in your debate journey, let me be a part of it and share my experience and passion for the activity with you!

My Teaching Approach: Actionable, Feedback-Driven, and Adaptable
Debate isn't just about speaking fast and getting as many points as possible across. My coaching strips away vague advice like "be more persuasive" and replaces it with concrete, repeatable concepts for how to build ideas, win people over, and set your arguments apart from others.
Whether you are a beginner looking to build your confidence or an experienced debater prepping for the world's toughest tournaments my methodology focuses on active practice and actionability. You won't sit through passive lectures; you'll speak, adapt, and refine in real time.
What a Typical 60-Minute Session Looks Like
(Note: The depth and pacing of each step are customized based on whether we are focusing on foundational skills or advanced tournament strategy.)
Warm-Up & Target Drill (10 Mins): A quick, targeted exercise (e.g., beginner argument-building drills, point-of-information handling, or framing drills) focused on your personal growth areas.
Concept & Strategy Breakdown (15 Mins): Direct, practical instruction on a core skill ranging from basic speech structure and persuasive delivery to advanced actor analysis and geopolitical framing.
Live Practice & Prep (20 Mins): Applying the concept to a real motion under timed prep conditions, followed by you giving a full speech.
Feedback & Strategy (15 Mins): Granular, judge-perspective feedback detailing what worked, what needs improvement, and what to focus on going forward.
What Sets My Coaching Apart
Absolute Beginners Are Welcome: Starting debate or public speaking can feel intimidating. I specialize in breaking down complex concepts into simple, manageable steps, helping new speakers find their voice, build genuine confidence, and enjoy the process.
Tailored, Goal-Oriented Instruction: I don't use a rigid, one-size-fits-all curriculum. Whether your goal is overcoming stage fright, excelling in local school leagues, or breaking at varsity tournaments, our roadmap is built around what you want to achieve.
The Adjudicator's Perspective: Having judged and broken at top-level international and national tournaments, I coach from the ballot backward. I teach students exactly how judges make decisions and how to get into the mind of a judge in order to get the win.
Proven Pedagogical Track Record: I’ve spent over eight years working with students across all levels—from middle schoolers finding their footing to top university debaters. I know how to adapt complex political and social theory into accessible, high-impact debate arguments.
Format Flexibility: Deep expertise across British Parliamentary (BP), World Schools (WSDC), Canadian National, Model UN, and general public speaking formats.
Who These Lessons Are For
Junior High & High School Students: Looking to build foundational public speaking confidence, excel in local/regional leagues, or prepare for national tournament circuits.
University Debaters: Aiming to polish advanced strategy, impact weighing, and breaking at elite tournaments.
Model UN & Public Speakers: Looking to master impromptu speech structure, policy analysis, and persuasive delivery.
