About Mary
I am originally from China, and Chinese is my native language. English is my second language.
Before moving to the United States, I worked as a middle school teacher in China. I currently live in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and I have more than 15 years of experience in K–12 education.
With my background in both Chinese language and education, I enjoy helping students learn Chinese in a structured, engaging, and practical way. I work with students of different ages and proficiency levels, from young children to high school and college students.
I believe language learning should go beyond textbooks. In addition to developing students' listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, I enjoy introducing students to Chinese culture, traditions, festivals, geography, history, and everyday life in China.
My goal is to help students build strong Chinese language skills while developing an appreciation for Chinese culture and becoming confident communicators.

I offer Chinese language classes for students from daycare through Grade 12, as well as college students.
Before classes begin, I provide students with paper textbooks or online books, depending on the student’s needs and preferences. I typically complete one book per year, although the pace may vary depending on the student’s age, level, learning goals, and progress.
My regular Chinese language program develops all four essential language skills:
Listening
Speaking
Reading
Writing
For students who primarily want to develop their speaking and conversation skills, I can adjust the curriculum and focus more on practical communication rather than following the full textbook program.
After each class, students receive homework and practice activities to reinforce what they have learned and help them make steady progress.
Although my classes are primarily based on the textbook, I frequently incorporate additional educational and cultural activities to make learning Chinese more engaging and meaningful. These may include:
Virtual tours of China
Chinese festivals and celebrations
Chinese traditional culture and customs
Chinese history and geography
Age-appropriate videos and multimedia activities
Real-life Chinese language and cultural experiences
My goal is not only to teach students how to speak, read, and write Chinese, but also to help them understand and appreciate Chinese culture while developing practical language skills they can use in real-life situations.
