About Matthew

Hi! I’m Matthew, and I'm a native English speaker from the UK. I was born in London but have lived in the beautiful city of Oxford for many years. I'm an Oxford University graduate, and I've spent most of my professional life as a scriptwriter for major film, television and advertising companies. I’ve also taught scriptwriting to visiting students at Oxford University, and I'm a CELTA-qualified ESOL teacher with an additional Business English teaching certificate for Oxford TEFL. In other words, English has been right at the heart of my life for many years.

I have a deep love for my own language, and I've built my whole career around it. But I'm also a lifelong language learner, studying German, French, Italian, Russian and Czech. So I really understand the challenges of learning a foreign language, and how important it is to get the right sort of tuition. I also know that language is so much more than theory and grammar. It's also about communication, culture, nuance and expression. That's why I like to use my deep practical knowledge of English, combined with my formal teaching skills, to teach English that is colloquial, fluent, idiomatic, and convincing in any situation.

About the lesson

I offer online lessons for advanced or business English learners who want to take their English to a new level.

Your English may already be quite good, but you really want it to be better. You'd like to communicate more fluently, clearly and confidently. You want to speak and write with greater ease and expression, so you can use your English as effectively as possible, whether for business, while travelling or in any social situation.

My lessons are designed to get you to that higher level. First, we'll identify where you need to make the most progress. Then we'll base your lessons on your specific aims. Forget dry theory and endless formal exercises. I'll teach you English for the real world, drawing on my extensive experience using English at the highest professional level combined with my practical CELTA skills. You'll find my teaching style is friendly, flexible and fun. I'll encourage you to speak and write as much as possible, using practice methods and materials that are relevant to your life and goals. Together, we'll work to give you real control over your English, so that you can use it with real clarity and confidence.
