About Joey
I hold a Juris Doctor from the University of Illinois Chicago School of Law and a bachelor’s degree in business from the University of Missouri. My professional background includes several years of legal experience in both private practice and government, where I developed strong research, writing, analytical, and communication skills. Before entering the legal field, I worked in a business role managing a large portfolio of commercial clients, which strengthened my ability to communicate with people from different backgrounds and explain information in a practical way.
As a tutor, I take preparation and professionalism seriously. My goal is to create an environment where students feel comfortable asking questions while still being challenged to develop a genuine understanding of the material. I am patient, dependable, and focused on giving students clear explanations and practical strategies they can continue using on their own.

My approach to tutoring is to make difficult material easier to understand by breaking it into clear, manageable steps and connecting abstract concepts to concrete examples. I focus first on identifying where a student is getting stuck, then explain the underlying concept in plain language before working through practice questions or examples together. I also encourage students to explain the material back to me in their own words, which helps identify gaps in understanding and reinforces retention.
A typical lesson begins with a brief review of the student’s goals and any material they are currently struggling with. From there, I explain the relevant concepts, walk through examples step by step, and then have the student apply what we discussed independently with guidance as needed. What sets me apart is my background in both law and business, which has trained me to analyze complicated information, identify the most important issues, and communicate them clearly. I am especially well suited for college and graduate-level students who need help with law, legal reasoning, writing, business-related subjects, government, history, or other courses that require strong reading comprehension and analytical skills. I can also adapt lessons to different learning styles and focus on exam preparation, assignments, or building a stronger understanding of the subject overall.
