About James
I am a trumpet player and graduate of the Jazz Bmus course at Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. I began playing Trumpet at age 7, and have studied music and worked to improve my playing ever since. Through the end of Sixth Form and beginning of my University study, I mentored the Southampton Music Service training Brass Band 'Brassroots', including going on a residential trip to run group practise sessions and directing rehearsals, as well as assisting in sectional practise. In this time I also volunteered to mentor students in the Southampton Youth Brass Band, guiding inexperienced players in rehearsals and during performances.
During my degree at RBC, I spent two years studying Pedagogy and teaching theory. As part of this module I volunteered to run workshops with the community Jazz band 'The Notebenders', focusing on ensemble playing and Jazz improvisation techniques.
Since graduating I have provded one-to-one teaching (in person and online), become the director for the SMS Training band Brassroots, teach a weekly jazz workshop at Winchester University, and have taught group instrumental lessons in multiple primary schools. I have spent years studying under a variety of world class tutors in group and one-to-one settings. This has given me a good understanding of what makes a good music lesson (and, more importantly, what doesn't!) and I strive to create a relaxed and collaborative environment for students to learn comfortably and effectively.
In terms of performance experience, I have recently completed a 4 month contract playing on Cunards Queen Elizabeth cruise ship. On land, I have played at such venues as The Royal Albert Hall, The Southbank Centre, Cheltenham Town Hall, Cheltenham Jazz Festival, The Eastside Jazz Club, O2 Academy Birmingham, Turner Sims, and 02 Academy Guildhall in Southampton. I have had the pleasure of being mentored by, and performing with, some great current jazz musicians such as; Soweto Kinch, Julian Arguelles, Percy Pursglove, Jason Rebello, Julian Joseph, Liane Carroll, Binker Golding, Jeremy Price, John O'Gallagher, and John Surman.

I believe that music is a personal process that rewards curiosity and exploration. I therefore tailor my lessons around what the student needs (and wants!) to work on. Whether it's learning the basics of playing the Trumpet, working on technical etudes, or learning to improvise, I always endeavour to make the process of learning and practising engaging through explorative exercises that allows the student to guide their own learning.
