About Kieona

Hello! My name is Kieona, and I am currently a rising senior at the Univerity of Pennsylvania studying neurobiology and actively researching neurodevelopment. I'm originally from Oklahoma City and enjoy traveling, reading, and trying new restaurants in my spare time. I have found throughout my studies that there is a significant difference between knowing enough to pass an exam and having a functional base from which to draw conclusions and make evaluations on a subject. Further, during my time at Penn I have come to realize that there is also a difference between mastery of a subject and mastery of pedagogical technique, and have come to realize that the passion and enthusiasm a professor has for teaching can make all of the difference when it comes to students learning and retaining fundamentals of a subject. This is what I will to bring to my tutoring services - enthusiasm and creative teaching styles to help my tutees retain and master the subjects they want, and a collaborative approach to learning that sparks a long-term appreciation for science, philosophy, reading, and writing. I have always found my academic pursuits to be both enjoyable and rewarding, and love having the opportunity to foster an appreciation of the pursuit of knowledge.

I am currently studying neurobiology at the college level and researching the development of a particular cell type in the brain. This means I have a broad knowledge base of cellular biology, and up to date knowledge of techniques, approaches, and discoveries in molecular neuroscience. I am aiming to eventually continue on to obtain a Ph.D., as I have really fallen in love with my research and the scientific process.

I would love to hear from you! I really enjoy tutoring, and hope to spark an appreciation for whatever subject you would like a little extra help with! I can ensure prompt responses, flexible hours, and a cheery, patient, and passionate demeanor. Feel free to contact me with any questions you may have, or hopefully to schedule a lesson!

I have been an informal tutor for younger students since I was in elementary school, was involved in piloting an after-school peer tutoring program at my high school, and have volunteered as a college admissions coach/essay reader throughout my time in college. I scored a 780 on SAT Reading, and have always had very strong competency in reading assessments. I have also volunteered to tutor for the QuestBridge program after being selected as a match semifinalist. I have extensive experience working one on one with other students and a wide variety of learning styles. As a tutor, I believe collaboration and an open, relaxed environment so that students feel comfortable asking every question which may help them better process information or grasp complex subjects.
