About Ellen
I am a former Ivy-League professor who has taught students across a broad spectrum, from age 11 to postgraduate level. I am passionate about helping people to become excited by writing, whether that is in an examination context or through guiding them creatively in one-on-one writing sessions. I have an exemplary academic record with all A*s across GCSE and A-level and won an award for the highest performance on my undergraduate degree programme. As a practising writer, I have six years workshop experience. This balance between practical success and personal passion means I am well equipped to help you or your child find great writing and academic success.

I offer two distinct tutoring services: support with English Literature for A-Level and GCSE students and creative writing guidance for writers of all ages. I am open to both short and long term tutoring plans, whether you or your child need help addressing a specific writing/examination issue or whether you are seeking ongoing structure and support. Before any session, we will have a free twenty minute video chat where we can discuss the specifics of what you or your child are looking for and ensure that we would be a good fit to work together. All sessions I lead are underpinned by my excitement in the possibilities of language. Combining my passion, lauded teaching history and stellar academic record, I create a comfortable and encouraging space where students/writers are pushed not only to improve their capabilities but to fall in love with the written word.
English Literature & English Language:
One-one-One Lessons:
These are thirty minute to one hour lessons (depending on the student's preference/availability). The content of these lessons will be determined based on the student's needs. We may review homework/mock exams. We may work on close-reading skills. Throughout the lesson, I draw on my strong academic background and my own skill and passion as a writer to inspire students to look beyond the examination rubric and discover the excitement in the language beneath.
Creative Writing Tutoring Sessions:
One of the most challenging aspects of writing is editing your own work. It can be incredibly difficult to look at a piece of writing you have spent months working on and really understand what isn’t working. I believe that how to read, like how to write, is a skill that can be developed. In our sessions, I will provide both specific detailed feedback about the piece of writing you have shared with me and equip you with the practical tools which you can use independently to assess and strengthen your own work.
One-on-One Feedback:
These are one hour sessions where the writer and I speak at length about a piece they are working on. I will read the piece in advance and be ready to speak about the work. Drawing on my experience as a professor, and six years in writing workshops, I create a space which feels both comfortable and inspiring. My priority is that each session leaves you excited to return to the page.
Line Edits:
The writer sends me a piece of writing and I respond via email. I will correct grammar errors and give detailed comments in writing, offering both encouragement and constructive feedback. My approach to writing is rooted in curiosity, focused only on helping you fulfil your creative vision. The fee for this service is based on page count.

Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the teacher
I have known Ellen as a friend and academic peer for the last seven years, and would wholeheartedly recommend her as a tutor. She is incredibly hardworking, organised, and ambitious, both for herself and others. I had the pleasure of being in Creative Writing and English Literature workshops and seminars with Ellen for a number of years during our undergraduate degree, and she was always thoughtful, constructive and generous with her contributions and critiques.
I have learnt so much from Ellen, and from hearing feedback she received, know her students at Columbia and beyond have too. She is a dynamic and creative teacher who is excellent at adapting her approach to suit different styles of learning. Anyone would be lucky to be tutored by her!View more recommendations
