About Robert

I believe the reason why I was accepted to Columbia University was because of the strength of my essays. I had a 3.7 high school GPA where the average accepted GPA was closer to 4.0. I understood I only had one opportunity to show the admissions officers who I really was and why they should admit me. I couldn't passively explain why I wanted to be there - I needed to convince them how their community would benefit if I were in their student body.

The college application process is daunting, but I assure you that time is on your side. My key was starting early. I remember seeing all the top students start their essays a week before they were due. By that same point in time, I already had written 10 drafts of my essays. In addition, I had consulted with my English teacher to develop the block of text that answered the essay prompt into a smooth and compelling piece of writing.

I include the following detail because it is important to my mission as a tutor:
Many students with better grades than me did not get into their top choice schools. My dedication to my essay writing allowed me to stick out of the 38,000 applicants to Columbia, and be among the 2,200 (5.8%) accepted to the school. I aim to show any student how they can accomplish this with focused work on their writing. Seniors have worked 3 years on their GPAs - the last and most important step is working on their essays for just a few short months.

I teach storytelling and articulation in essay writing. When students are applying to their dream schools, these literary tools will allow for the admissions officers truly get to know them beyond their grades and resume, and for the reader to genuinely believe of the intention of the writer.

Lessons will consist of the following:
- understanding what the student wants to write about
- connecting unique life experiences to the story they wish to tell
- reframing that narrative in a way that will inspire the reader
- learning about nuances of their dream schools in order to connect the essay to specific elements of that environment
- understanding intention vs impact in their writing
- revising drafts until the essay stands alone as a great piece of writing, in addition to it accomplishing its goal of being a convincing application
