  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

My path to teaching and tutoring actually began with my own educational challenges. As someone diagnosed with dyslexia early in life, I experienced firsthand how transformative the right educational support can be. The turning point came after watching "The Big Picture: Re-Thinking Dyslexia," which completely changed my perspective on learning. Instead of seeing my differences as limitations, I began to embrace creative thinking and taking control of my own education.

During my time at Yale, where I studied Art History and Education Studies, I started developing alternative learning strategies that worked for me. I became particularly interested in visual thinking strategies and how museums could serve as spaces for different types of learners. This interest led me to begin tutoring in 2016, where I found I could use my personal experience to help other students find their own paths to success.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I specialize in English language arts, academic writing, and college essay preparation. What I love most is helping students find their unique voice, especially when working on college application essays. There's something incredibly rewarding about guiding students through the process of discovering and articulating their personal stories. My background in art history and education has taught me that everyone has a distinctive way of learning and expressing themselves.

What particularly excites me is when students begin to see writing not just as an academic exercise, but as a tool for self-discovery and communication. Whether we're working on SAT verbal preparation or crafting a personal statement, I enjoy helping students develop critical thinking skills that will serve them well beyond just getting a good grade or test score.

If I had to identify aspects I like less, it would be when students feel pressured to conform to what they think colleges "want to hear" rather than expressing their authentic selves. I always encourage students to push past these preconceptions and find their genuine voice.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Throughout my academic career, I've been fortunate to work with educators who demonstrated the power of innovative teaching methods. At Yale, I was particularly inspired by professors who could seamlessly integrate visual arts with literature and history. These mentors showed me how cross-disciplinary approaches could make learning more engaging and accessible for all students.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?
Based on my experience developing curriculum at The Idea School and working with hundreds of students through Maza Academics, I believe the essential qualities are:

Adaptability: Understanding that each student requires a unique approach and being able to adjust teaching methods accordingly
Deep subject knowledge: Having comprehensive understanding of the material while being able to present it in multiple ways
Strategic thinking: Being able to identify both immediate needs and long-term goals for each student
Creative problem-solving: Finding innovative ways to present and explain concepts
The ability to build confidence: Helping students recognize and develop their strengths while providing tools to address challenges
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

One of my most memorable experiences was developing the Design and Entrepreneurship course at The Idea School. We had students exploring fashion design history while simultaneously creating their own fashion houses. Watching them engage with historical and cultural analysis while applying it to their own creative work demonstrated how powerful integrated learning can be. The students weren't just memorizing facts - they were actively engaging with the material and creating something meaningful to them.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

One of the ongoing challenges in education is helping students move beyond standardized approaches to learning. In my SAT tutoring, for instance, I work to help students understand that preparing for standardized tests doesn't mean adopting a standardized way of thinking. I've developed strategies that allow students to approach these tests in ways that align with their natural thinking patterns while still achieving excellent results.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

My passion lies in creating integrated learning experiences that bring together different disciplines and approaches. Whether I'm teaching English, history, or helping students with college essays, I'm most excited about finding ways to make the material relevant and engaging through multiple angles. This is reflected in my curriculum development work and in my approach to individual tutoring. I believe that when students can engage with material in ways that resonate with them personally, they not only learn more effectively but also develop a genuine enthusiasm for learning.
  • What makes you a Superprof?

What sets me apart is my combination of classroom teaching experience, curriculum development expertise, and success in individualized tutoring. I've developed and implemented curriculum for every level of high school humanities, helped numerous students significantly improve their SAT scores, and guided many students to acceptance at top-tier universities. My approach combines rigorous academic standards with creative, personalized teaching methods. I understand how to meet students where they are while helping them reach their highest potential. Whether I'm teaching a class at The Idea School or working one-on-one with a student on their college essays, I bring both extensive subject expertise and the ability to adapt my teaching methods to each student's needs.
