About Refael

Refael was a 2024-2025 Tow Journalism fellow at FRONTLINE. He is an investigative journalist and graduate of Columbia University’s School of Journalism. In 2024, Refael released his first documentary, “Allies Left Behind,” which focuses on Afghan journalists, women’s rights activists and military personnel who are stuck in limbo as they wait for visa processing to come to the U.S. His film is available on Tubi and was featured on Voice of America’s Dari broadcast. He was recently named a Pulitzer graduate fellow, where he is pursuing a story about the non-human primate trade from Mauritius. Refael previously worked at the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction, where he assisted with investigations into U.S. funding for reconstruction programs in Afghanistan. Refael obtained a master’s degree in international relations from Georgetown’s School of Foreign Service, and earned a CASA Fellowship to study Arabic and Middle Eastern studies at the American University of Cairo in 2020.

Writing a standout essay is about more than good prose — it’s about clarity, argument, and resonance. Drawing on my experience as a journalist and policy researcher, I help students and professionals craft essays that communicate ideas effectively, whether for college, graduate school, or professional programs.

I hold degrees from:
- Columbia University (M.S., Journalism)
- Georgetown University (M.S., Foreign Service)
- University of Michigan (B.A., International Relations)

I previously worked as a journalist for FRONTLINE PBS, reporting on investigative stories like Hurricane Helene’s Deadly Warning. My writing on the monkey trade has appeared in Science Magazine, and my documentary Allies Left Behind is streaming on Tubi. I also spent a year with the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR), contributing to oversight and policy research on U.S. operations abroad.

I have written and guided essays ranging from personal statements and Common App essays to academic essays in political science, international relations, and public policy, as well as professional fellowship and grant applications.

My coaching focuses on helping writers:
- Develop a clear, persuasive argument
- Structure essays logically and coherently
- Use storytelling and personal experience strategically
- Tailor their writing to the expectations of admissions committees, professors, or professional reviewers

Whether you’re working on a college or graduate application, a political science or policy essay, or a professional statement, I help you communicate your ideas clearly, persuasively, and memorably.
