About Lawrence

I'm an International Master with over 30 years of experience at the highest levels of competitive chess. My journey began at age 8 when my father taught me the game as a rainy-day alternative to football, and I went on to win three consecutive British Youth Championships and earn two Grandmaster norms. You might recognize my voice from some of chess's most iconic moments—I've commentated World Championship Finals, including the historic 2013 match when Magnus Carlsen became World Champion, as well as the World Candidates Tournament, Chess Olympiads, and elite super-tournaments like the London Chess Classic. I've also managed GM Fabiano Caruana, the 3rd highest-rated player of all time, giving me unique insights into what it takes to compete at the very top. Beyond commentating, I've created extensive training content for Chess.com, ChessBase, and Chess24, and founded The Full English Breakfast, which became the world's most popular chess podcast. My passion has always been making chess accessible and exciting—whether I'm explaining a World Championship position to millions of viewers or helping a beginner understand their first tactical pattern. The quality I value most in teaching is the ability to communicate complex ideas in a simple, precise, and engaging way. After three decades in this game, I still get genuinely excited when I discover a brilliant move or help a student achieve their breakthrough moment. Outside of chess, I'm a complete sports fanatic—I love boxing, football, and I'm even a fan of Latin dancing! But chess remains my greatest passion, and I'm excited to share that passion with you.

My Teaching Method:

I believe chess should be interactive, engaging, and challenging—never boring or intimidating. My approach focuses on active learning where students think critically and discover concepts for themselves rather than passively memorising moves. I tailor every lesson to your level, goals, and learning style.

A Typical Lesson:

We start with a brief review, then dive into new concepts through practical examples and real game positions. Using tactical puzzles, strategic exercises, annotated master games, and analysis of your own games, you'll be actively engaged throughout. Lessons conclude with homework assignments that reinforce what we've covered and ensure continuous improvement.

What Sets Me Apart:

With 30 years at the highest levels—commentating World Championships, managing elite grandmasters, and creating content for Chess.com, ChessBase, and Chess24—I bring world-class experience to every lesson. I've explained complex chess to millions of viewers, honing my ability to break down sophisticated concepts into simple, digestible pieces. I keep lessons energetic and focused, always challenging students at exactly the right level.

Who These Lessons Are For:

Advanced Players (1600-2200): Refine tournament preparation and opening repertoires.

All Ages Welcome: I adapt my style for juniors and adults alike

Whether you're learning for fun, school tournaments, or serious competitive goals, I'll help you improve while keeping the joy of chess at the centre of everything we do.
