About Nathan
With 7 years of experience tutoring piano, I’ve taught over 150 students, many from high school and college. My teaching approach is supportive and adaptive, focused on helping students develop technical proficiency and musical expression at their own pace. I place a strong emphasis on sight-reading and technique while encouraging students to connect emotionally with the music they play. I strive to make each lesson engaging and relevant by tailoring material to individual tastes, whether classical, jazz, or pop. One of my proudest teaching moments was preparing a college student for their first recital. They started nervous but, through focused practice and positive coaching, became a confident performer who received a standing ovation. That moment was not just a success for the student—it was a milestone in my teaching journey. My philosophy of teaching piano revolves around nurturing both the intellect and the heart, believing that great musicianship arises from a combination of strong fundamentals and deep personal connection to the music. I begin every student’s journey by focusing on posture, finger independence, rhythm, and note reading, ensuring that technical skills are built correctly and efficiently from the start. But technical training alone isn’t enough; I strive to make every lesson musical and meaningful by connecting skills with expressive goals. I use a wide variety of repertoire, tailored to the student’s tastes and goals, to show how technique and theory apply in real music. We listen together to recordings, discuss stylistic interpretations, and explore different approaches to phrasing and dynamics. Creativity is an essential pillar of my teaching—I encourage students to improvise, compose simple melodies, and experiment with rhythm and harmony.
These exercises foster originality and help students feel a sense of ownership over their musical growth. I also emphasize active listening and reflection, often having students record themselves and analyze their playing to develop critical listening skills. I am patient and adaptive, recognizing that each student progresses at their own pace, and I provide encouragement and honest feedback with kindness and clarity. I teach students how to set practical practice goals and maintain consistent habits, emphasizing quality over quantity. For students interested in performance, I prepare them with not only technical polish but also strategies for overcoming stage anxiety and connecting emotionally with an audience. For recreational learners, I focus on keeping lessons enjoyable and pressure-free while still encouraging steady progress. Above all, I want my students to experience the joy of music-making and develop a lifelong love for the piano that enriches their lives beyond the keyboard.
