About Mikhail

My name is Mikhail Klepfish, and I am a chess coach and software engineer based in Phoenix, Arizona. I have been playing chess since the age of 8, giving me more than 25 years of experience studying and playing the game.

I currently have a 2400+ rating on Lichess, and I am passionate about sharing the knowledge and experience I have developed through years of intensive chess study.

One of my greatest strengths is my meticulous and systematic approach to chess. I like to examine every element of a position closely and understand exactly why things work the way they do. Rather than simply memorizing opening lines or general principles, I break positions down into individual variables and develop clear systems for evaluating them. This allows me to explain not only what the best move is, but why it is the best move and how to recognize similar situations in your own games.

My background as a software engineer complements this approach. I naturally enjoy analyzing complex systems, identifying patterns, calculating variations, and breaking complicated concepts into logical, understandable components.

As a coach, I adapt my lessons to each student's level, goals, strengths, and weaknesses. Whether you are a beginner learning the fundamentals or an experienced player looking to improve your tournament results, I aim to help you develop a deeper understanding of chess and become a more independent thinker at the board.

My goal is not simply to give you moves or tell you what you should have played. I want you to understand the underlying logic of chess so that you can evaluate positions for yourself, make better decisions, and ultimately develop your own strong and individual playing style.

I help my students become the strongest chess players they can be by developing their understanding, calculation, and individual playing style.

Our lessons are highly interactive and tailored to your level and goals. Together, we analyze opening variations, middlegame positions, and endgames—not simply memorizing moves, but understanding the ideas behind them and learning how to make better decisions over the board.

I have structured chess courses ranging from beginner level to advanced, world-champion-level material. Whether you are just learning the game or looking to seriously improve your tournament results, I can provide a clear path for your development.

My endgame training includes advanced material covering:

♟ Pawn endings
♞ Knight endings
♝ Bishop endings
♜ Rook endings
♛ Queen endings

All of my study materials are available in .PGN format, allowing us to analyze positions, variations, and complete games interactively during our lessons.

My goal is not just to teach you more chess—it is to help you understand the game deeply, think independently, and develop a playing style that brings out your strengths.
