About Meghana
Namaste! I am Meghana. I come from Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu in Southern India. I am currently completing my master's at Roehampton University as part of the Erasmus Mundus Masters for Dance, Choreomundus. My first postgraduation degree was a Master's in Fine Arts from Sastra University, under the direction of Dr. Padma Subrahmanyam. I am under the tutelage of Sri. Renjith Babu & Smt. Vijna Vasudevan and have spent 13 years learning from Smt. Jayanthi Subramaniam. My initial teachers were Smt. Deepa Balaji and Smt. Pramila Ramesh.
I have danced all my life. I don't know a life without dance and movement. At each stage of life, there have been different reasons to pursue dance, either as a hobby or as a passionate pursuit during my teenage years, and more recently in the last years, as a professional pursuit that placed a goal on my passion. What I now realise when I look back is that at every stage, at every turning point, dance has been my anchor, my safety net, my guide, and my friend. It has helped me find meaning, purpose and joy in life.
Dance, in my opinion, is the biggest celebration of human life. It brings together several faculties of the human body seamlessly. Dance is a humbling ideal-perfection in dance is not a conquest; rather, perfection in dance is surrendering to the moment, surrendering to the movement, and living in an encompassing sense of awareness that actually makes you forget yourself. Dance helps reach beyond the limitations of time and space where the imagination is trained constructively to be free and realise its fullest potential.
Dance is also discipline. It means showing up and putting in the work. It means learning to treat your body with respect and kindness while pushing it to its limits.
These are some of the lessons I have learnt in twenty-eight years of everyday classes, immersive practice, and the challenges of professional performance. I want to teach because I want to share the joy of dancing and its potential to affect people constructively. Even a single lesson of dance can be life-changing, and working with like-minded students who are curious would mean creating new pockets of infectious joy!

My classes are for
- beginners who want to begin their journey into Indian Classical Dance
- Intermediate students who wish to rework fundamentals and techniques of the body, emotional storytelling, understanding rhythm and recitation
- More advanced students who would like to do a deep dive into choreographies and compositions
Each lesson is for a duration of 60 minutes.
I work within the framework of the Kalakshetra technique. The classes are open to students from 8 years of age, no upper limit really :) The class structure will be designed according to the students' physical abilities, taking into account any injuries or conditions that inhibit movement. Full transparency from the students about these details is required, as this will help us progress safely.
I have spent my whole life immersed as a student of Bharatanatyam. My teachers, themselves accomplished and celebrated artistes, have trusted me with classes within their institutions. My classes will focus on a holistic system of transmission as I have learnt from my teachers.
Consistent learning will help us uncover layers of meaning, movement, mythology, and musicality.

As the classes are online, students will need to ensure that they have a laptop with a good webcam, a stable internet connection to avoid time lags and disruptions (crucial for Bharatanatyam to maintain rhythm), and a space where they can tap the ground loudly and move freely. Laptops/ devices are to be placed where I can see the whole body move in space, at a distance and closer to the camera. Please also ensure a good speaker so that I can hear you if needed and so that you can hear my instructions clearly.
Carpeted floors are to be avoided if possible as they inhibit the ability to strike on the ground.
