About Dominic
I teach Mathematics privately to students at GCSE, A' Levels and also to undergraduate students. I am patient and flexible in every aspect of tutoring. I have a methodical approach in teaching students over a wide range of ability levels.
I come from an engineering background and mathematics has always been a language I understand and love most. I am passionate about mathematics and its applications in our daily lives. To me it is an exciting subject just like many others and I always do my best to encourage people to embrace it with their best efforts, to believe it is amazing, friendly, interesting and most importantly it can perform wonders.
Teaching is something I enjoy doing. It is like a hobby to me. I am quite passionate about it. It is also a job to which I am very committed.
One of the basic tools I use for effective teaching is to assess the level of comprehension of a student simultaneously whilst administering a topic. I always pay attention to the response of a student to a given topic of discussion to determine any gaps in the basic blocks of their knowledge on the topic. This determines the manner in which I would conduct the lesson so as to maximise the understanding of the topic as well as enhancing the confidence of the student in confronting and solving similar problems in future.
To develop the abilities of students to make them feel confident in the subjects I teach, I improvise strategies by relating topics to practical things in life. This makes the topic interesting, easy to remember and manageable to them than it seems initially. I encourage them to work hard to believe they could do better than they think and also to let them know they can achieve good grades with their best efforts.
To alleviate any worries or panics for making mistakes regularly, I do ask my students to be honest and not to feel ashamed of their mistakes. I drive them gradually to perfection by letting them know it is normal to make mistakes but to learn from them. We do have different abilities as people. Hence, I try as much as possible to put myself in the position of the student and to help them see what I see as a tutor but from their position as a student.
My Secondary School Maths teacher devoted a couple of hours each day after school for 3 days to walk me strategically, through the whole "Additional Mathematics" syllabus. This crash course or revision sessions were so effective I was able to prepare fully for my exams within a week.
That was my inspiration. It's always been a pleasure for me ever since I graduated from High School to share knowledge through teaching and I have successfully tutored many students by incorporating some of the strategies I acquired from my former Maths tutor in my own teaching methods.
Finally, Teaching is not the only thing I do. I am a crazy aircraft enthusiast. I love big jets, helicopters and large scale R/C modelling. I enjoy going to major air shows in the UK and I look forward to visiting MAKS & OSKOSH. I also love football but I do not think I would ever see my favourite team play. My favourite team is made up of all the players I admire from different teams in different parts of the world.
