About Julie
I am a middle school humanities teacher with over a decade of classroom experience, specializing in history, reading comprehension, and writing. I am passionate about helping students build confidence, strengthen their critical thinking skills, and develop a genuine curiosity about learning. My approach is patient, supportive, and tailored to each student's individual needs, whether they need help catching up, preparing for an assessment, or challenging themselves academically. My goal is to create a positive learning environment where students feel empowered to ask questions, take risks, and achieve success.

My teaching approach is student-centered, inquiry-based, and relationship-driven. I believe students learn best when they are actively engaged in asking questions, analyzing evidence, and making meaningful connections between the past and the present. Rather than focusing solely on memorization, I encourage students to think critically, collaborate with others, and develop confidence in expressing their ideas.
I differentiate instruction to meet individual learning needs by incorporating visual supports, discussion, primary source analysis, writing practice, and interactive activities. I also emphasize organization, study strategies, and executive functioning skills so students become more independent learners.
A Typical Lesson
A typical tutoring session begins with a brief review of previous learning and a discussion of the student's goals for the day. We then work together on new content, whether that means breaking down a challenging reading, analyzing historical documents, preparing for an assessment, or improving writing skills. Throughout the lesson, I check for understanding with questions, guided practice, and immediate feedback. We finish by reviewing key takeaways and creating a clear plan for independent practice before our next meeting.
What Sets Me Apart as a Tutor
I have over a decade of experience teaching middle school humanities in an independent school setting and designing my own history curriculum. My background allows me to support students beyond simply completing assignments—I help them understand how to think like historians, strengthen their writing, improve reading comprehension, and build lasting academic confidence.
As an Equity and Community Life Coordinator, I also bring a strong understanding of creating supportive, inclusive learning environments where students feel comfortable asking questions and taking intellectual risks. I combine high expectations with patience, encouragement, and individualized support to help each student reach their potential.
I primarily work with students in grades 5–8, with particular expertise in middle school history, humanities, and social studies. I also support students with:
Essay writing and historical writing
Reading comprehension and document analysis
Study skills and organization
Test and quiz preparation
Executive functioning and assignment planning
My lessons are especially beneficial for students who need extra confidence, struggle with organization, want to deepen their understanding of history, or are looking for enrichment beyond the classroom. I adapt every lesson to the student's learning style, goals, and academic needs.
