About Karen
I have been tutoring or teaching in some capacity since I have been 12 years old! I started as a volunteer summer program gymnastics teacher which eventually worked into a job with the After School Program in our School District. I remained as a gym teacher for over 7 years. During this time I also did a assistant teaching role at a mentally handicapped school. It further taught me how to approach children who have a hard time learning. I also during this time volunteered at my childhood elementary school as a teacher's assistant. I continued my tutoring into college. My math teacher asked me to be a tutor for the math department for pay. I eventually married and had eight children and homeschooled seven of them including a blind, CP, autistic daughter, and a developmentally delayed son. I will give one story: my delayed son was especially struggling with reading. I purchased an expensive reading program for slow learners. Three times a week for over the school year, I did Part I, Lesson 1. Each day, he did not retain any knowledge of the lesson. It was like a new lesson to him. FINALLY, three weeks before the end of that school year, he said to me after we had started the lesson: We did this yesterday! That started him on the road to being able to read! I haven't found ANY child at this point, who does not have the ability to learn. It is how the learning is presented and the patience of the teacher that can get the student to where they can grasp the concept. I will use various methods until the student GETS IT. Why? Because its as important to me and to them. I want them to WIN!

Firstly, I will evaluate the student's knowledge and drop-out. I will see what foundational parts are missing. If the student needs to re-lay the foundation for the subject needing help, I will take time to do this first. Once the foundation is re-layed, we move into an approach of learning the subject such as adding double digits:
1. I first give the history of the subject at hand. This sets the purpose of learning for the subject giving it value to student.
2. I then give the framework to the subject to be taught.
3. I then give the parts and how each part works before starting the concept to be learned.
4. I then slowly introduce the concept showing how the parts function in the subject.
5. I then work very easy problems to get the concept instilled.
6. I then work the concept to it's highest level for their age to see how it continues to work out.
7. I DO NOT move on until each step is mastered making the next step easier to learn.
This is an effective method I have used for the 31 years of educating. I have moved children from developmentally delayed into a functioning level. I prefer elementary school level, because once they get the basics well, I know they will continue on with the techniques I teach them to approach learning something new. I have tested this approach with others I have tutored in person and find that it is VERY effective.
