About Slade
Hi! My name is Slade Barret Brown, and I am currently pursuing my Master’s Degree in Canadian History from Simon Fraser University, where I also completed my bachelor’s degree as a member of the History Honours cohort, and with a minor in Labour Studies. I have a background focused on modern Canadian history, with a focus on political and colonial histories that inform and shape our present. It is through understanding these connections between the past and our present lives that makes history exciting and relevant.
As a lifelong resident of the Greater Vancouver area, I have long felt motivated to understand how the place I live became what it is, and how we can use those lessons to envision even brighter futures.
Outside of my personal and professional passion for history, I am also a writer and musician, a lover of film, and an appreciator of BC's natural beauty that I am privileged to experience.

My teaching style is not about the rote memorization of historical dates and names, but instead focuses on developing the critical thinking skills necessary to excel at not only history, but other fields as well. Anyone can quickly google the date of when Jacques Cartier first sailed the St. Lawrence, when Canada confederated, or when the Statute of Westminster passed; the hard work is developing skills to articulate WHY these things are important, and to critically assess their relationship to both past and present in your own language.
I have over a year of experience as a teaching assistant for university history courses, where each semester I led two to three tutorials, leaving me in charge of leading presentations, discussions, analysis of sources, and the evaluation of the work of 60-90 students at a time. My time in this work has afforded me a deep familiarity with the expectations for students in university-level courses, and how best to lead them to success.
Success is not a universally-defined metric but instead a personal measure, and as such I communicate with students about their goals with their learning; what would success look like for them? What are they hoping to achieve from this tutoring? Clear communication about goals and objectives helps everyone--tutor and student--to achieve what they set out to do when working together.
I develop my lesson plan with my students to ensure their needs are met, and what their goals for success look like. Depending on the subject matter and needs, a typical lesson will open with a short lecture/teaching of important content; this would be followed by back and forth critical discussion of the subject matter, a related reading completed or at least familiarized with before class, and ideally a review of a small writing assignment for the student, ideally one for each lesson after the first. Short writing assignments focusing on critical and personal responses help students feel comfortable making arguments around material themselves, and writing regularly in smaller doses helps to effectively develop the critical thinking and writing skills needed to succeed at history. Through regular meetings to learn, discuss, and critically evaluate the student’s work and arguments, their confidence and ability to tackle these subjects can become ingrained second nature.
