About Kirsten
I am a historian, educator, and writing coach with graduate training in History from Rice University and experience working with students from middle school through college. I have taught and supported students in history, academic writing, and research-focused courses, with an emphasis on clear thinking and strong communication. I have been appointed to teach at Texas Southern University, where I work with college students on historical analysis, research, and academic writing. In addition to classroom teaching, I have professional experience working in museums and public history settings, where I developed and delivered educational programs for students of different ages and learning needs. This background has shaped my ability to explain complex ideas clearly and make historical material engaging and accessible. As a tutor, I recognize that every student learns differently. I take time to understand each student’s strengths, challenges, and goals, and I adjust my pacing, explanations, and strategies accordingly. I aim to create a supportive, respectful learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and building confidence. My goal is not only to help students succeed on individual assignments, but to help them develop skills they can use independently in future classes. I work with middle school, high school, and college students in history, writing, and related subjects, and I tailor each session to the student’s level and needs. — Kirsten

I tailor my tutoring to each student’s level, goals, and learning style, whether they are in middle school, high school, or college. My approach is structured but flexible, focusing on understanding, confidence, and skill-building rather than memorization.
For history, I help students understand the significance of historical events, concepts, and themes by connecting facts to broader questions such as cause and effect, continuity and change, and historical perspective. We work on reading primary and secondary sources, identifying key arguments, and explaining ideas clearly in discussion or writing.
For writing and resume support, I guide students through the full process, from brainstorming and outlining to drafting, revising, and polishing. I emphasize clear organization, strong thesis statements, and using evidence effectively.
A typical session begins by identifying what the student is working on and where they feel stuck. We then break the task into manageable steps, review examples together, and practice applying the skills in real time. I always aim to leave students with clear next steps they can use independently after the session.
What sets me apart is my background in both teaching and academic coaching. I work with students across age groups and ability levels and prioritize patience, clarity, and encouragement. I create a supportive, low-pressure environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and learning through trial and revision.
My lessons are well suited for middle school and high school students building foundational skills, as well as college students seeking support with history courses, academic writing, research papers, and resumes.

Kirsten is a very qualified candidate. Throughout the years I have known her, she has assisted me in revamping my own resume, worked in higher education settings doing the same for countless students, and has always maintained professionalism and competence throughout. Throughout her own educational endeavors, I have witnessed Kirsten modeling incredible dedication and resolve to studying thoroughly and deepening her understanding of a wide array of materials. We have had many years of study dates together, where even though I was on a different career trajectory, she was able to explain and simplify challenging concepts for me and demonstrate effective strategies for retaining information as well as utilizing research skills to promote a more rich understanding. Her passion for education and helping others shines through in so many ways, from her experience educating others in historical museums and providing career development assistance to students.
