About Stephen

I’m a dedicated educator with over a decade of experience teaching high school students in both public charter and independent school settings. I hold a Master of Arts in American Studies from Trinity College and a Master of Arts in Teaching Social Studies from Teachers College, Columbia University, where I am also completing a Master of Education in Philosophy and Education. My academic and professional background has equipped me to guide students through complex material while helping them build confidence, think critically, and express themselves clearly. I specialize in U.S. History, Government, World History, and Economics, including AP-level courses such as AP U.S. History and AP Government and Politics. My teaching style is student-centered, structured, and encouraging. Whether a student is working to pass a class, prepare for an exam, or deepen their understanding of the world around them, I tailor each session to meet their specific needs and learning style. I’ve worked successfully with a wide range of learners—from students overcoming significant academic challenges to those preparing for admission to top colleges—and I take pride in helping each student reach their potential. I see tutoring not only as academic support, but as mentorship. My goal is to equip students with the tools, strategies, and confidence they need to succeed in school and beyond.

1. Why Take Tutoring Lessons with Me?

Students should take tutoring lessons with me because I bring a rich academic background, years of classroom experience, and a deeply personalized, student-centered approach to every session. With advanced degrees in American Studies and Social Studies Education from Trinity College and Teachers College, Columbia University—and current doctoral-level study in philosophy and education—I help students not only master content but also develop the skills and confidence to think critically, write effectively, and communicate with purpose.

2. My Teaching Method and Techniques

My tutoring approach is inquiry-driven, skills-focused, and highly adaptive. I begin by identifying each student’s goals and challenges, then work backward to design lessons that scaffold complex skills like historical analysis, argument-based writing, source evaluation, and close reading. I employ Socratic questioning, guided modeling, and frequent feedback loops to deepen understanding. I also emphasize metacognition—helping students become more aware of how they learn, not just what they’re learning.

Whether preparing for AP U.S. History, developing research papers, or struggling with course readings, I create a supportive yet rigorous space where students can engage meaningfully with the material and grow as learners.

3. A Typical Lesson Plan

Each lesson is tailored to the student, but a typical 60-minute session includes:
1. Check-in (5–10 minutes): Discuss progress since the last session, clarify goals for today, and address any immediate concerns.
2. Core Instruction (30–40 minutes): Targeted work on a specific skill or topic—e.g., analyzing a primary source, organizing an essay, reviewing key historical themes—using practice questions, real-time feedback, and discussion.
3. Reflection and Planning (10 minutes): Review key takeaways, outline next steps, and assign light preparation if applicable.
Throughout, I use active engagement strategies and real-time adjustments to ensure the session stays responsive and productive.

4. What Sets Me Apart

What sets me apart is my ability to connect rigorous content with each student’s intellectual and personal development. I bring experience teaching in diverse school settings—public charters, independent schools, and AP-level classrooms—and I know how to differentiate instruction for learners at all levels, from those overcoming significant challenges to those aiming for elite college admissions. I’m not just here to help students pass—I aim to help them take ownership of their learning and develop as scholars and citizens.

5. Who the Lessons Are For

My tutoring is ideal for:
• High school students in grades 9–12 taking U.S. History, World History, Government, or Economics.
• AP students preparing for AP U.S. History, AP U.S. Government and Politics, or research and writing-intensive coursework.
• College-bound students seeking to strengthen their historical thinking, writing, and analytical skills.
• International students or English Language Learners who need support with reading comprehension, writing, or academic language in the humanities.
