About Louis

I am a sound engineer and a highly experienced performer with over a decade of regular gigging, writing and recording under my belt. I specialise in guitar, bass and vocals and have been teaching since 2011. While grades in music are important for approaching music academically, when it comes to dazzling people with the guitar, I believe it is far more preferable to let the playing do the talking.
My teaching style is very centered around song-writing and learning through the application of creative practices. We achieve this by assessing the techniques of famous players, deconstructing the hooks and melodies of our favourite songs and using these as the inspiration for the creation of captivating original compositions.

I like to begin by assessing the student’s existing understanding of the instrument and their motives for picking it up. What or who inspired them to pursue the guitar? What styles do the hope to be proficient in? Are there any particular songs they wish to learn or artists they wish to emulate?
Teaching familiar theme tunes is a great way to introduce students to the instrument as they are brief, recognisable and guaranteed bring a satisfied grin to the learner's face. These themes and motifs will always be age-appropriate and provided in the form of guitar tablature: a simplified notation system designed for the guitar requiring no previous knowledge of music theory to understand.
Once the student has attained a grasp on basic technique and terminology - highly-depended on the individual - I like to jump straight into composition and improvisation. I’ve always considered this to be the most active method of learning. After we've practiced some rhythmic strumming techniques and some simple, deconstructed scales, I like to record the student and I taking turns to jam licks and improvised lead parts. This delivers a tremendous feeling of accomplishment and is a rewarding method of live feedback when compared to solely learning and regurgitating recognised standards note for note. The recordings stand as fantastic milestones in their journey and can be reviewed and reassessed to demonstrate their progression. These recordings make self-assessment a breeze and allow the player to pinpoint exactly which techniques they need to focus on to develop further.
I wholly encourage students to write their own chords progression and parts, independently or under my supervision during our lessons. All the necessary equipment is on hand to capture these ideas and we can quickly assemble a finished recording that the student can take with them and build upon.
Whilst jamming and writing are essential to my delivery style we must never lose sight of the importance of formal music theory and technique, both of which are embedded into each lesson and are exemplified by specific player and song case studies.
