About Carlota
¡Hola a todos!
My name is Carlota, but everybody calls me Car. I am both an English and Spanish Philology BA graduate, with an MA in Education, specializing in teaching Spanish as a foreign language.
I am passionate about a lot of stuff, but without a doubt, languages take the prize (along with all things reading and writing!). Things being so, I have been lucky enough to work as a translator and a teacher for a number of years, and it is my pleasure t to share my love of the Spanish language and literature with others.
For me, to learn another language is almost an act of love; a love of the country, its people, its history, culture and art; and as such, it shouldn't be stressful or frustrating, but rather enjoyable and fun. Languages are more than just a set of vocabulary and grammar rules, and to highlight the human element in them is as important to me as to make my students distinguish between ser/estar!
In sum, my approach as a tutor is to create an anxiety-free and trustful environment in where you can allow yourself to try out the language in different ways and make mistakes without consequences, be comfortable and communicate meaningfully, as it is my belief that to have a healthy relationship with the language you are learning makes all the difference in the acquisition process.
As a teacher and a tutor, I have worked extensively with people from all ages, backgrounds and levels, cutting my teeth in language schools with crowded classrooms and distilling my teaching practice in 1-to-1 sessions both online and in person. Thus learning in the process how to cater for the specific needs and demands of every individual student so that they can successfully meet their personal linguistic goals.
Everybody has a different reason for learning a new language: some people see it as hobby, a way of broadening their horizons or be autonomous when traveling; others need it in order to advance their professional lives; whereas some might just want to be able to pass an exam or improve their grades. Ultimately, experience has taught me that what you want to do with language must necessarily inform and condition the teaching approach deployed, and consequently, understanding where my students are at and what they aim to achieve with language is key to me and my methodology as a tutor.
Whatever your aims are, and regardless of whether you are a total beginner, have a high-school or university level understanding, or are simply looking for some engaging conversational communicative practice to improve your fluency and accuracy, I offer highly individualised and learner-centered lessons; with a focus on fostering in my students a positive and enthusiastic connection with the Spanish language and culture at large.
I have successfully prepared students to pass their GCSEs and Spanish A-levels with excellent results, and similarly helped others with their Oxbridge University applications and exams. On the other hand, I have also worked with young kids in their early stages of learning, using gamification techniques and fun virtual resources to keep them motivated and reduce the cognitive load that learning a foreign language at such a young age can sometimes entail.
No two students are the same and each has their particular strengths, weaknesses and ways of learning, so I try my best to tailor each lesson accordingly, taking all these personal elements into account. Whether it is speaking practice that you need or in-depth explanations of grammar and vocabulary, pre-exam intensive reviewing, support with homework or to better your writing skills, I am here to help!
In addition, I am well-versed in Spanish literature of all periods, having studied it at university level (and generally being a bit of a bookworm myself;)). So if you are struggling with essay writing or the close reading and textual analysis of novels, poems or texts of any kind, I'd be delighted to give you a hand and boost your Spanish reading comprehension and academic writing, as well as proof-read and/or edit your essays and work should you need some guidance with that.
Having a good command of the language is the first step, but I also like to make sure my students have the sociocultural and linguistic tools necessary to tackle any literary text they might find challenging or can't come to grips with on their own.
I've both studied and lived in the UK for a number of years, so communication and explanations in English as well as in Spanish should not be a problem. I have online availability on weekends as well as during the week.
If you are looking for somebody who is enthusiastic about teaching as well as about what they teach, and if you find that you could use some help to get where you want to be with your Spanish but are not really sure where to start, consider me as a friendly and experienced option. I promise to give you my best in return.
P.S (I believe in fair wages for fair work. But I also believe that education shouldn't be a luxury, so if you are in need of a qualified and devoted Spanish tutor, but you are somewhat economically struggling in any way, know that I am more than happy to negotiate and agree on an affordable and viable rate for you.)
