About Lydia
- What kind of experience do you have? I am Senior Instrumental Manager for Wandsworth Music, where I am in charge of all instrumental programmes in schools, over 40 tutors and the curriculum and repertoire for the programmes. I also help run our Music Academy, teach the cello and conduct the Junior Orchestra, working with children aged 5 to 19. I have my own private teaching business in Croydon, where pupils ranging in age from 5 to 35, come to me to learn and develop. If they choose to, many of my students undertake ABRSM grade exams, all of whom have thus far achieved Merit and above and I encourage all of my pupils to perform in informal concerts which I set up each term so that they can play to and with each other, gaining valuable performance and chamber music experience. Whilst at the Royal College I worked with the RCM Sparks, which is the College's Youth Music Programme run by the Woodhouse Centre. This involved taking part in composition masterclasses and orchestral string concerts attended by hundreds of children from local boroughs. I am a cello coach for Chamber Players chamber music holiday courses, for young string players aged 5 to 18 and form one half of my violin/cello duo The London Duo, performing in concerts and playing for weddings and other functions. - Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate? Yes. - Where and with whom did you train? I went to the Junior Royal Academy of Music, studying with Erica Simpson and Ben Davies. For my Bachelor of Music degree in Performance, I attended the Royal College of Music, studying with Leonid Gorokov and Thomas Carroll. I carried out my masters degree in Performance at Trinity Laban Conservatoire, studying with Natalia Pavlutskya and Alex Ivashkin. - Do you belong to any professional organisations? I am a member of the Orpheus Foundation Orchestra, the Orion Orchestra, The Situation Opera Orchestra and the London Arts Orchestra. I form half of cello/violin duo, The London Duo. - Tell me about some of your current students. One of my students is a young 5 year old beginner, with an 1/8th size cello! He is learning so much more about how to communicate, listen and learn and suits the cello very much. Another is 22 and used to learn the piano and so knows how to read music which is a real advantage. She is doing very well and is a pleasure to work with. I give music theory lessons to a gentleman wishing to progress his compositional techniques and I teach two siblings who come to me for alternate cello and piano lessons! I believe in all my pupils having enjoyment from learning their instrument and aim to make my lessons engaging and inspiring. I expect my pupils to come prepared for each lesson to ensure they are making strong progress each week and feel a sense of satisfaction and achievement whilst learning. I have taught over 50 private pupils over the last ten years of teaching privately and have taught thousands of young children in whole class and ensemble settings over the last 8 years.

Learn something new and rewarding today! - Which subject(s) do you teach? Cello, Piano and Music Theory. - Tell me about your qualifications. I am a graduate of the Royal College of Music, where I completed an undergraduate honours degree in performance. Then in 2013, I completed a Masters in performance on the cello, at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, with a core unit in instrumental teaching. - How much do you charge? I charge £40 for hourly or £25 for 30 minute lessons (30 mins more suitable for younger children). - Where do you teach? From my home in Sanderstead, Croydon and at local pupils' homes - When are you available? My lesson days/times are flexible. I teach during the week, after-school and evenings and on Saturdays and Sundays - Which ages and levels do you teach? From age 4 upwards, all are welcome! Complete beginner to advanced grade 8 and diploma players. I teach adults and children. - Which qualifications do you prepare your students for? ABRSM Grade and diploma examinations. - Do you have a personal message for students? Music is a fantastic means through which to enrich and expand your life. Learning an instrument takes dedication and determination, but can reward you in so many invaluable ways, and allow you to make some new and exciting friendships along the way :). It also supports your child to develop their skills in listening, focus and problem solving, boosts confidence and builds determination. It's also really good fun!!
