About Alexander
I have my Master’s Degree in mathematics from University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee. There, I worked for a year and a half as a classroom educator, teaching college students mathematics. Additionally, I have worked as a high school summer school algebra teacher, and I have over 10 years of tutoring experience. I did my undergrad at University of Wisconsin - Madison in mathematics and biochemistry, and I have helped over 500 students pass their classes with C’s or better. I can count on two hands the number of students I have had that failed, and each I offered warnings and extra help to, but they did not put in the work. If you put in the work, you should do well

I have several teaching methods which I employ with my students depending on what works for them. For students who are more visual, I draw lots of pictures and/or use equations with arrows explaining my steps. For students who are more practical, I give examples of areas where this knowledge can be applied. For students who struggle to comprehend theory, I give many examples. For students who struggle beyond that, I work to help them reason about how something works from the inside. I also assign practice problems for them to try in our sessions, and then I talk them through the answers after they tried them.
I am adaptable, and while I do not deal in absolutes and will not rule out unintelligence, I have never met an unintelligent student. Many people struggle with math and chemistry, and there is no shame in that. I full heartedly believe in a no shame environment. I want my students to know that I am safe to work with and that I do not judge them for messing up as even I make mistakes sometimes. It is a part of learning.
With that said, I expect a lot out of my students and I expect them to put in an effort and to let me know when they are struggling. I cannot help them if they do not communicate with me. If they are in a class and they have problems they are struggling with, I will not do the problems for them, and I expect them to try the problems first, but I am able to explain the problem solving processes, and I have countless examples that use similar ideas that will give them a path forward.
To summarize, communication is key. I am adaptable, but I need my students to let me know when something is not working for them. I tend to teach one way initially using lots of examples and some theory, but if my student is a visual learner or something is not working for them, they need to tell me. If I say something that makes them uncomfortable, I want them to be able to tell me, which means that trust has to be built.
Tutoring without trust is extremely difficult so on my first session, I spend about half an hour where they can ask me anything within reason about me, my personal life, my philosophies on teaching, and hobbies. I give them time to tell me about themselves, though most do not open up right away. Additionally, if I am working with high schoolers, I like to talk to the parents separately (especially in an unpaid pre-tutoring session) where they can ask me whatever they want and they can tell me about their child and what to look out for when their child is frustrated, and what I can do to best help them succeed. Additionally, I like to know about their child's hobbies, for while I will ask the student about their hobbies, if they are not opening up, if I can bring up something they are interested in, then I find that they are more likely to open up.
Teaching is my passion, and I want to bring the joy of learning into my student's lives. Most people struggle, but if they can find my sessions enjoyable, they are more likely to learn the material and may even carry it with them into the future.

Perfect! Alex helped me get an A in my Calculus 2 class. He is very knowledgeable on all Calculus concepts and the mechanics of math in general. He will break down problems for you when you just need someone to show you how and why things are done. He is professional and I would highly recommend booking a session with him if you need help passing any Calculus class!

Alexander tutored me during the Fall 2020 semester for Calculus 2. After our first tutoring session, I immediately knew that he would make the course content simpler for me. He's the type of tutor to go above and beyond while explaining topics. He would even go as far as to reteaching certain topics if I did not grasp them enough in lecture. You could tell he knew the material inside and out. One could tell that he really loves to tutor. It shows in his fruits. He is by far the best tutor I have ever had for math. I highly recommend him to be your tutor as well.
Alexander made room in his incredibly busy schedule to assist my child in chemistry and trigonometry. Not only is he knowledgeable but can adjust his approach, based on the student's learning style. He is patient, flexible and has helped my child feel less anxious and more confident.

I charge $40 an hour, though I offer 10% off for 5 lessons, and 15% off for 10 lessons. I request students cancel within 5 hours of a scheduled lesson, though I am flexible for emergencies. I ask that students make me aware of any needs they had during the free lesson, especially if it could affect attendance down the road
