About Riku
I hold a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Psychology, along with five years of clinical experience in Japan. I'm currently completing a Master's in Counseling here in Sydney, which keeps me actively engaged in understanding how people think, communicate, and grow.
Originally from Kyoto, I'm a native Japanese speaker with fluency in both Japanese and English, and have been living in Sydney for two and a half years. This gives me a genuine understanding of what it's like to navigate a new language and culture — something I bring into my teaching.
I'm committed to creating a professional, supportive environment where students feel comfortable making mistakes and asking questions. Whether you're learning Japanese for travel, work, or personal growth, I take your goals seriously and show up prepared for every session.

My approach to tutoring is grounded in psychological principles — I don't just teach grammar and vocabulary, but pay attention to how each student learns, where they get stuck, and what keeps them motivated. This allows me to tailor every lesson to the individual rather than following a fixed curriculum.
Lessons are typically one hour, and I'm happy to meet in person around Sydney or online, depending on what works best for you.
I've been tutoring Japanese to local Sydney residents for over 2 years, working with students across a wide range of levels — from complete beginners to Japanese nationals, like who grew up with some exposure to the language but want to refine their skills.
Whether you're starting from zero or looking to fill in the gaps, I'll work with you to figure out what's actually holding you back and build from there.
