Find out more about Samuel

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

When I was at university studying for my bachelor's degree, I started teaching my classmates some concepts of econometrics. Eventually, I discovered my talent for explaining complex concepts in simple language. Over time, tutoring became my preferred hobby and an alternative way to earn extra money while helping students around the world.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I mainly teach econometrics, statistics, and economics. I also have experience with data science, data analysis, and programming in R, Stata, and Python.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

My main role model was my professor and advisor for my master's thesis. He helped me a lot and gave me many useful pieces of advice to improve my teaching skills as a teaching assistant.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

A good tutor must be patient and have the knowledge to teach correctly. Additionally, a good tutor should possess the soft skills necessary to understand the students' needs.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

When I was in my bachelor's degree, the professor of econometrics was a genius but a terrible teacher. He was extremely intelligent, but his teaching methods were ineffective. As a result, most of my classmates preferred to skip his classes and study the subject on their own. During these times, I began helping my classmates understand econometrics, and I realized that being intelligent and knowledgeable isn't enough to be a great professor.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

Teaching online was a challenge at first, but eventually, I became comfortable with it. Now, my online classes are actually more engaging and present than in-person ones.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

My passion is teaching and sharing my knowledge with students.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P)?

Patience, organization, and professionalism in working with each student.
