About Michael
Having picked up chess at primary school, I haven't really gotten serious until COVID where I played chess online almost every single day and started participating in various interschool tournaments.
I am self-taught, but when I started volunteering and teaching chess during my first year of university, I made sure that they don't make the same mistakes I did on my chess journey. I accommodate and tailor my lessons to what my students want to explore, while still maintaining a focus on fundamentals to guarantee steady progression.
I started off knowing nothing, and am currently representing my university in various inter-varsity chess tournaments. If I can do it, you can too!

Chess progression is never steady and linear, but what is important is discipline and persistence when you feel like you face a roadblock.
Oftentimes new players get overwhelmed by the sheer amount of materials, from opening theory, tactics, pawn structures, endgames, etc. Depending on your experience and rating, I try to make the most to make you a more well-rounded player.
If you are completely new, we'll begin discussing basic rules, piece movement, checkmates, and basic trades. Further on, we'll discuss basic openings, that work in real games, simple tactics, forks, and positioning, as well as looking forward a couple of moves. Experienced players have a wider variety of topics to discuss, from various opening variations, positioning, attacking/defending principles including sacrifices, converting a winning advantage, tempo, structures, etc.
Most importantly, I make sure that you have fun during lessons, because my primary goal is to create more lifelong players and enjoyers of chess.
