About Jordi

Since his beginning as a double bass player the itinerary of Jordi Cassagne is a strolling over the course of his artistic collaborations. Immerged into early music and the study of the violone sometimes, or going with the flow of jazz and improvised music, he explores different musical aesthetics.

Jordi graduated both in Jazz and Early Music. From 2008 till 2014, he completed a Master degree in Jazz at the Royal Conservatoire of The Hague , and from 2016 till 2019 he graduated in Early Music at the Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussel. During those years he studied Jazz double bass with Hein van de Geyn, Frans van der Hoeven, Clemens van der Feen... and violone and historical double bass with Maggie Urquhart and Korneel le Compte.

He is performing his own music with NOUROOG, a jazz quartet with Sylvain Debaisieux, Sam Comerford and Samuel Ber, and he is also leading the more rock oriented band LIMITE with Kobe Dupont, Benjamin Sauzereau, Camille Alban Spreng and Théo Lanau.

He is currently active on the musical scene with the bands :
LE BAL DE MARIE GALANTE (Afro Caribbean grooves)
TERPSICHORE (contemporary jazz)
HARATAGO (basque traditional music)
JULIEN MARGA QUARTET (jazz)
OMEGA IMPACT (polish songs)
BENGALIFÈRE (improvised music, european jazz)

Over the past years he met and played with musicians such as : Denis Badault, Beñat Achiary, Pedro Soler, Nicolas Nageotte, Michel Queuille, Olivier Thomas "Tomassenko", Catherine Delaunay, Laurent Rousseau, Didier Lasserre, Léo Jassef, Théo Lanau, Jean Dousteyssier, Quentin Biardeau, Peter Jacquemyn, Audrey, Medhi Chaib, Grégoire Tirtiaux...
And his musical projects gave him the chance to perform in prestigious stages such as Jazz in Marciac, Jazz à Vienne, North Sea Jazz Festival, Nederlands Dans Theater, Holland Festival, Errobiko festibala, les Éthiopiques de Mars, Uzeste Musical, San Sebastian's Jazzaldia, Mithra Jazz à Liège, Brussels Jazz Weekend ; or Tudo é Jazz in Ouro Preto in Brazil.

In 2014 , the first album of the trio Bengalifère was elected Révélation by Jazz Man/Mag.
In September 2016, the Julien Marga Quartet is laureate of the "Trophées du Sunside" .
In 2019, Julien Marga 4tet gets both the price of the Jury and the price of the audience at the Tremplin of Tonnerre de Jazz Festival in Pau,
and the band is also laureate of the Tremplin Cosmojazz x SACEM of Chamonix.

As a baroque double bass player and violone player, he had the chance to perform under the direction of Sigiswald Kuijken, Barthold Kuijken, Sebastien Marq and Peter Van Heygen and to perform with the Concerto Valiante Orchestra or the Orchestra van Wassenaer.

In contemporary music he played diverse orchestral pieces such as :
“To You” by Peter Schat, “De Tijd” by Louis Andriessen, the “Sponsus” by Sasha Zamler-Carhart, "Proposition of Fossils by Graham Flett, "Chord Symphony" by Tom Aldrich and the "Black Series" by Peter Ablinger.
Jordi took part in pluri-diciplinary-projects with " La Compagnie La Bâtarde” (Bordeaux), or "Ensuing" (Den Haag).

My lessons are both based on practice and on theory.
It is a question of making a direct connection between theoretical knowledge and its application in practice whether it is within the framework of improvisation or composition.
Learning involves several types of work such as:
-Analysis of different styles of music and their harmonic, melodic, rhythmic characteristics ...
-Harmony exercises such as carrying out accompaniment on the piano. -Being myself a double bass player, making bass lines on a harmonic grid
-Improvisation exercises based on various anchor points: harmonic sequences, melodic patterns, rhythmic pattern, ostinatos ... or more free, based on dynamics, an emotion ....
- Composition exercises
