About Ellen
I am an enthusiastic and adaptable teacher who seeks to create relationships with my students to be able to know how to motivate them to do their best work.
I am licensed to teach science for grades 1-8 and
I have taught 4th-8th-grade science and developed a science program from an enrichment into a core subject with vigorous project-based and fieldwork components.
During the pandemic, I led an outdoor classroom on a barrier island so that students could be in person safely.
Before becoming a teacher, I was a marine researcher for the US government and I continue to do marine habitat restoration in the summer under state and federal grants. This helps me to foster real-world science skills and habits of mind in my students. Bringing scientists and other stakeholders into the classroom, either in person or via technology, provides another way for students to explore potential career paths. My students have worked with scientists from universities, non-profit organizations, state managers, businesses, and fishermen. This past year my 4-6th graders wrote grants funded by the Youth Ocean Conservation Summit and formed an environmental organization supported by the Gulf of Maine Institute.
During the summer I do marsh and ocean habitat restoration and involve and mentor students from elementary through college-age in experiences doing community-based conservation.

I work to support the success of all students through respect for the child and highly engaging work.
My goal is for students to not just study science, but to foster a sense of wonder about the universe, and develop the skills to answer their own questions.
I am deeply committed to project-based pedagogy and believe that extending the curriculum from the textbook to real-life allows learners to contribute to challenges that are relevant to them and develop a sense of personal and civic agency that can serve them and their communities for a lifetime.
Lessons will be crafted for the specific learning style of the student and will include a variety of modes (auditory, kinesthetic, etc.) and hands-on activities. Suggestions and mentoring for real-world exploration and application will be offered.
My heart and my methods of teaching are inclusive of a wide range of learners. I have worked with a diversity of students including neuro-atypical students, students with learning disabilities, English language learners, and students across a spectrum of socio-economic situations.
