About David

With over forty-five years of professional experience, I've taught high school through university and hundreds of adult private students from thirteen to seventy-three. My background is in jazz and classical music, performing in concert, solo to big bands, contract studio work, composing music for documentary films, stage work, and as a concert producer, in addition to turning out CDs of my creative music from original solo classical guitar pieces through all types of jazz, world crossover, and beyond. For decades, I turned out the all-state high school players every year in the jazz bands, and a significant number went on to the best music colleges and conservatories and play even as older adults professionally all over the world.

The video below is a piece from a CD called "Between Silence" of classical guitar pieces I composed and recorded. I used famous paintings from the 18th through the 20th centuries as a visual feast to accompany the music, and I have created quite a few of these, just as a fun project. Since we are permitted only one video here, my work is available on the Bandcamp sales site under my name, < davidkraus dot bandcamp dot com >, where a diverse collection of music genres can be heard. P.S. Remember to replace those "dots." :)

I enjoy teaching and watching people learn. I use a self-developed method that uses a sophisticated yet easy-to-comprehend way tablature far more developed than typical tablature found in commercially bought books. By the time a student begins looking at a music staff, they already can read rhythms, understand the fingerboard, play scales and chord voicings everywhere, and play complete pieces of music including classical, jazz, folk, blues, and more. Essentially, you have learned how to play fairly well so approaching notes on a music staff is far less daunting of an undertaking and less intimidating which I have always found to be a hindrance for many people wanting to learn to play the guitar. Fretted plucked instruments have specific challenges not encountered on most other instruments such as piano or any wind or string instrument. My tablature method makes these challenges easy to negotiate as you learn. All levels and ages are welcome.

Though I have a base price here of $45hr, I am known to go over time quite a bit if a student requires this, which I will do at no extra charge. I want to make sure a student understands what they are doing after a lesson, so confusion does not set in, and they are confident in knowing what they are practicing. I also do biweekly lessons for those whose time is not conducive to weekly lessons, and I charge $60hr for these. They are more per hour, but far less than weekly at my normal fee. I am accustomed to working like this. So, whatever works for you I am open.
