About Carlos

My motto is: A teacher is a great guide for students if she/he teaches with passion, dedication and love but, more important, if that teacher is able to sow the seed of inspiration and motivation in his students. When I started teaching 34 years ago, I never thought how far my career as a teacher was going to be. I was 24 years old, just graduated from 'The University of Arts " in Cuba. To get my first job as a guitar teacher I had to play against other players and the board of directors granted me the position. In a country where the guitar is the national instrument, where the population knows very well either by playing or listening to the guitar, in theaters, on the streets, homes, restaurants, public concerts etc. To become a guitar teacher it is really challenging because almost everybody knows the instrument very well or at least is familiar with the most traditional songs in which the guitar is used as a principal accompaniment instrument. Guitar teachers in Cuba have to be real connoisseurs of the instrument. My first course teaching was the most difficult to manage different students with different personalities, brains, hands, physical conditions, emotions, talent and different perspectives. It was crucial to be in love with them otherwise I wouldn't have been able to help them individually, because in music, every individual is an inner world. I took them inside the fantastic world of competitions, master classes given for great Cuban and foreign professors, concerts and Festivals. One of the most relevant in my country was " The Guitar Festival " sponsored by Leo Brouwer where I conducted the 'Youth Guitar Orchestra " with 100 students from all the music schools of the capital in 2009. Since 1992 until now I have taught several generations of musicians that I feel so proud of. Seeing them growing as professionals and as human beings is something very gratifying. Since my arrival in the US in 2013, I have worked as a music teacher at " MultiArt Academy " Newark, New Jersey. Also, I worked with my wife Lazara Diaz in our own music studio for 3 years in Newark, NJ and actually we plan to open another private music school in Fort Lauderdale where I am living. As a performer, I am very active. I play as a soloist and with my wife in " Bona Fide Duo ". We have done our first CD " Doce Cuerdas " produced by the Cuban American composer with 12 Grammy nominations Yalil Guerra. Our Duo has won 3 Global International Competitions in 2024 and recently on May 20th, 2025 we performed at the Carnegie Hall of New York in a sold-out concert in tribute to one of the most influential Cuban composers in the 20th-21st centuries, maestro Leo Brouwer. My method is very didactic, beginners can learn in a brief period of time different tools to be able to apply them in any song or classical piece. I always start teaching the correct posture of the body and hands. From the first class I encourage my students to play from the first position easy chords like C, Am, G, D and simples ascending/ descending arpeggios, free and rest stroke. later, I plan to teach bar (proper use of the finger one in left hand), diatonic and chromatic scales( asc/ des), slurs ( asc/desc), chords( in different positions). Students can apply each of these tools inside every lesson that I take from the great Cuban method " Guitar Method I". It is a method very well designed for beginners. There are three more books of this method for levels II, III, IV. In each method are incorporated beautiful and attractive classical lessons with a wide variety of styles.

To those students that are in an advance level and want to improve interpretation and style concepts, I also can help according to my experience of playing and teaching.
I have demonstrated my good method as a professor for more than 30 years with great results in my students, some of them became great professional musicians and I'm looking forward to see the path of those I have at this moment.

I always demonstrate with my guitar any explanation I provide in front of the student. I think it is the best way to explain any detail whether it's technical or musical .

NOTE: This class is very special for those students that have decided to make classical guitar as a career, I assure that you will be in a good hands.
