About Patrick
When I watch someone play guitar, I'm mostly looking at their hands between chords. That's where tension, wasted movement and hesitation show up, and it's usually the part people never practice. I'll often stop you mid-song and ask you to freeze, then look at your hand with you: which finger moved more than it needed to, and which one could have stayed down? I want you to start seeing that yourself.
I like to explain things with something you can see or touch. If talking about finger placement isn't working, I might have you slide a finger up the string with your eyes closed until the note sounds right. I might mark a shared note with a small sticker, or play your chord change in slow motion next to mine so you can compare. Some students understand theory best by naming it. Others get it by hearing two versions and choosing the one that sounds right. I'll switch between those until something works.
A lesson with me has a steady flow. We play a lot, I comment briefly, and we try again with one thing changed. I'm happy to stay on one difficult change for ten minutes if that's what it takes, and I'm just as happy to drop an exercise that isn't helping and get back to the song. I want sore fingertips to be the hardest part of the first weeks, not confusion.
I teach young beginners whose hands are still small, teenagers who want to learn the songs their friends are playing, adults picking up the guitar for the first time, and players who've hit a ceiling and want to understand what they're doing. The approach is the same for all of them. Find the small movement, understand the shared notes, and keep the music moving.

Almost every guitarist knows this moment. You can hold each chord on its own, but changing from one to the next leaves a gap, a buzz, or a strum hand that stops and waits. In my lessons we practise the change itself rather than the chords. You'll learn to spot which fingers can stay down, which can slide along a string, and which really have to lift. Then we practise only that movement: fingers off, a pause, fingers on together, with no strumming. For a beginner going from G to C, that might mean finding out that two fingers keep the same shape and just move over one string. For a more experienced player moving between barre chords or jazz voicings, it means finding the shortest route on the fretboard so the harmony flows instead of jumping around.
The strumming hand gets its own rule: it never stops. Your arm keeps moving down and up like a pendulum, in time, and you decide whether to hit the strings or miss them. This solves one of the most common frustrations, rhythms that sound stiff or rushed, because your arm is always in the right place for the next beat. If a chord change isn't ready, the strum keeps going on open strings while your fretting hand catches up. That sounds rough at first, but it trains the habit that matters most when playing with other people: the beat doesn't wait for you.
To understand the fretboard, I often have you play a melody on a single string before showing it across the neck. Working on one string shows you the distances between notes as actual spaces you can see and feel, and that's the foundation for knowing where notes are rather than memorising boxes. More advanced players take this into improvisation. You'll solo using only the notes of the chord being played at that moment, so you learn to hear when your line fits the harmony and when it pulls against it on purpose. A box-shape scale on its own can't teach you that.
Everything happens inside songs. If we work on a picking pattern, it goes straight into something you want to play that same week, whether that's a campfire song, a riff, a fingerstyle arrangement or a jazz standard. You'll also learn how to take apart a song on your own: find its chords, spot which changes are hard, and know which of these tools to use. The goal is that you don't need me to give you a method for every new song.
