About Kathryn
I received my Bachelor of Arts in Asian Languages and Literature with a focus on Japanese from the University of Minnesota after studying the language and culture for 6 years. I have spent significant time in Tokyo since 2005, where my brother lives with his Japanese wife and daughters. I am passionate about the Japanese language, culture, and media, but over the years my language skills have gotten a tad rusty, so I am only able to offer lessons for early to intermediate learners of Japanese. I am able to read and write hiragana, katakana, and numerous kanji, and I am knowledgeable about Japanese grammar, sentence structure, and levels of modesty/politeness. The unique and complex nature of Japanese culture and society has always fascinated me, so I can help students get more acquainted with Japanese social norms and taboos.

I approach each lesson by first assessing the student's skill level based on their knowledge of hiragana, katakana, basic vocabulary, and sentence structure. If the student is starting from scratch, I begin with an overview of the elements and structure of the Japanese language and provide them with learning tools and resources if they are without. I encourage the student to study daily and complete practice work that I can check and review at each follow-up lesson. I am aware of how difficult to learn and different from English the Japanese language can be, so I am always patient and try to explain things in the most relatable way.
