About Ziad

As a tutor, my primary aim is their comfort with me as a guide. I insist on getting to know that student so they do not see me simply as a tool. Then, I want to understand how they are relating to the material they read and respond to at all times. Having established that rapport, I want the student to show me the assignment. I want them to tell me how they understand the task. I want them to tell me how they would seek to carry it out. Then, I would see how much of that plan can work to achieve the goal. Then, I would do my best to assist them achieve that goal.

As a teacher of literature, differentiation has been the best of tools. As a teacher, I believe myself to be a support to students. As a teacher, it is my primary goal to ask questions that students can answer through group work, videos, comparable means of understanding. For instance, a lesson plan for teaching a gothic novel like Jane Eyre, might stress some probative introductory questions such as: Can you imagine an orphan girl, nearly friendless, to make her way through life? How do you understand the ‘monstrous’? Do you think a man who is married to someone deemed monstrous or not of sound mind to be made to remain married? Then, based on answers to such questions, the time that is spent with the work should stress reasonably paced reading, activities that will teach students how to annotate the reading. In annotating, students would learn how to recognize structural components of the works, concepts that will help them understand the work at deeper levels. But all of this need not remain academic but be concerned with larger global, historical, literary, and ethical concerns.

As a tutor, I would stress listening to the student to see how they have understood the work they are studying. In conjunction with that, how does the student understand and fulfill the task that the teacher has assigned the students. I pay close attention to mastering skills in writing so that the student will feel comfortable with their level of response. In aiding a student to respond to presentation assignments, I would stress creative questions that can trigger the audience’s attention and then how to allow the literature to do its work to further aid that end.
