About Samuel
I'm a Lead Automation Engineer at a billion dollar private company that dominates the geospatial intelligence software sector. I've been coding for 8 years, 4 professionally, and consider myself a "polyglot" (meaning I can read and write new languages quickly).
Before this, I worked at the Department of Defense in an analytical capacity that involved coding for data science purposes. I've also taught students at High School and Collegiate level communication and research skills, so not new to education techniques.
My current role requires skills in Git, Python, TypeScript, Docker, testing, and CI/CD pipeline development. I also am responsible for mentoring a team of 4 other developers who have grown from interns to professional devs on our team.
I love learning and I'm excited to go on a programming journey with you!

My approach to teaching programming is rooted in hands-on practice and feedback. Becoming a good developer is a lot like becoming a soccer player. We could spend hours discussing the aerodynamics of a ball in flight or the geometry of field position, but you'd be a better player (especially in the beginning) if you just spent some time on the field practicing and being taught to incrementally improve your technique.
If you're new to coding entirely, we'll start by exploring the different programming languages and their typical uses so you can select a language you'd like to begin your journey in. Then we'll pick out some projects and slowly build the skills needed to complete them, all while getting real code review from me.
If you've already got some experience and want to up your game, we'll jump into projects with some hard requirements, and I'll give you feedback and guidance on the best practices to attempt.
There's no typical lesson for coding, we could start anywhere, but we'll generally begin a newcomer's journey by setting up your "development environment" so you feel prepared to do some work, then go over the basics of the language you're interested in.
