About Malachy
I am a composer and trumpet player in postgraduate study at the University of Manchester. I love working with performers to find cool new ways to approach instruments, and enjoy exploring contemporary composition and finding new influences I have never previously explored. I am also Musical Director of the University's Jazz Band, with some of my favourite music coming from contemporary bandleaders such as Maria Schneider and the late Kenny Wheeler. I also regularly play weddings and other such events, and also play with and write music for a dance-y Jazz-Fusion band called Lick the Moon

I work with students to build up their skills and fundamentals in order for them to pursue what they enjoy in music. Every student thinks differently, so I believe a musical education is about working collaboratively to find the most intuitive approach to concepts for each individual. Lesson lengths are flexible and can be agreed upon beforehand - typically ranging from 30 minutes to an hour. Theory/composition lessons are provided for those studying for GCSE and A level, or anyone with a budding interest. Trumpet lessons are provided for anyone who plays up to the standard of ABRSM/Trinity Grade 8, but it is not required that students are working through these grade systems if they do not wish to be.
