About Alex
I am a graduate student soon to have my Master's in Data Science from Mercyhurst University, and I have a Bachelor's in Statistics from Cal Poly SLO. I have had multiple internships and experiences with not only tutoring, but working in an applied setting with mathematics, statistics, and data science. I tutor mainly university-level students (undergraduate and graduate) but I am flexible and can adapt if you are at a different level. My method of teaching is to ask good questions. I want to help everyone I work with succeed, but that comes from asking students good questions about what they know, drawing from previous knowledge and skills to arrive at an answer mostly themselves (not simply giving away answers). I believe this method is best for student understanding and development because it allows them to reinforce prior knowledge and build on current skills. A typical lesson would include reviewing prior practice problems or concepts from the lesson before, delving into the specific concepts if any questions arise in the process, and then making a goal and plan for next week for the student to accomplish outside of the lesson. I believe this combination sets me apart as a tutor because I value helping students truly understand not only what they are learning, but how it is practical and relevant to the field(s) they are interested in/studying.
