About Sophia
I grew up in the United States between Northern California, Utah, and Hawai`i. I first started teaching English when I lived in Japan in 2019. I graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Stanford University with a bachelor's degree in Comparative Studies of Race and Ethnicity. I have professional experience in social science research, publishing, and archives. I have a variety of interests from listening to Japanese city pop vinyl, reading nonfiction, writing science fiction, and watching thrillers.

I teach ages 12 and up, with a focus on young adults.
I taught free English in Japan for a year. I have been doing essay coaching and editing for four years. One of the students I coached through a graduate school application was successfully admitted to Stanford's East Asian Studies master's program.
I like to schedule an initial meeting where we simply discuss a student's goals and learning objectives. Lessons can last from 20 min to an hour depending on the student's preference.
Conversation lessons I like to begin with pronunciation for the list of terms the student would like to utilize, move into practice conversation, and then leave time for questions and review. If requested, I also do confidence exercises to help students who have difficulty with freezing up mid-sentence. My focus is always on communication and students being able to build connections with others through language.
Writing lessons also depend on the student's goals. I prefer to cover different stages of writing over different sessions. I always start by covering the formula for a genre of writing (such as humanities essays versus a research report). After that we can work through brainstorming, finding sources, outlining, first draft, editing structure, line edits, and so on. I am happy to advise starting at whatever stage a student may be at, including looking over full papers and so on.
