About Corey
I graduated from Oregon State University in December 2022 with a Bachelor's in Computer Science. Before Enrolling in Oregon State I graduated in the top 20% of my class at the University of New Hampshire where I majored in Information Systems and Business Analytics. I will begin full time work as a Software Engineer at a multinational bank in a few months.
Throughout my time at Oregon State University I've gained 8 months of experience as a Teaching Assistant for an Introduction to Web Development class. In this role I held office hours where I assisted students 1:1 with their coursework. The projects in this class involved building a Full Stack application using Node.js, MongoDB, Express.js and React.js. In addition to holding office hours I assisted professors with curriculum development as well.
Alongside my role as a Teaching Assistant I also have completed 2 software development internships. One internship was at a Fortune 500 company where I worked using SQL to transform and transfer internal data into updated formats. The second Internship was at a consulting firm where I worked in a team to develop an AI assisted chatbot. I have received multiple offers for full time software engineering positions starting in January 2023 and plan to work as a software engineer during the day while teaching new students at night and on weekends.
In the past 4 months on other tutoring sites I have tutored students in a variety of concepts ranging from Data Structures and introductory programming concepts in Python to Web Development concepts in JavaScript. Since I am a new graduate, I bring a unique insight into the current state of the entry level software developer market and I hope to share this expertise with my students. I primarily focus my tutoring lessons on the following subjects:
Introductory Python and JavaScript classes
Introductory web development classes using React, JavaScript and HTML/CSS
Data Structures and Algorithms
When tutoring students on Computer Science topics I always stress to them that the topics are hard and that it's perfectly fine if learning doesn't feel linear. I also stress that no question is a dumb question, sometimes the questions that seem simple can unlock a student's understanding of a topic.
During tutoring sessions I try my best to guide students to understanding using several methods. I've found that tracing the code out line by line and tracking what happens to be a great learning technique
