About Brandy
I grew up on a small farm with cattle, chickens, goats, and pigs. I love doing any activity outside or being on the water! I also love reading for pleasure and journaling my thoughts and feelings daily. I love animals, especially dogs! I have two teenage children (9th and 12th grade) and love being a mama and a teacher. I enjoy learning about my students and their likes and dislikes. I LOVE TO MAKE LEARNING FUN! I am a hands-on learner myself, and do not enjoy sitting in a desk all day, taking notes, and listening to lectures. I want to be up and about, moving around, and motivated to learn!

I have a masters degree in special education and elementary education. I have been teaching for 22 years. I teach regular education classes for English/Language Arts and reading. I have also spent 20 years co-teaching in the classroom with a regular education teacher, serving as the special education co-teacher. I love co-teaching and having the opportunity to learn new ideas and strategies based on knowledge and experience of my co-teacher. Double teachers mean double the fun and learning! I enjoy using differentiation strategies and instruction to help students with different learning needs. I am experienced in progress monitoring students with disabilities, their Individual Education Plans (IEP), and their IEP goals and objectives.
I love teaching reading and finding interests of my students to bring out their love of reading! I absolutely love learning "all about me" from my students and sharing "all about me" with my students. This gives us time to understand each other and learn more about our interests, learning styles, and how to engage in a positive learning experience. I design my lessons based on learning target questions or learning objectives for elementary students . I start with a high-interest read aloud. We discuss the read aloud and talk about any real-world experiences they may can connect with. Next, we complete a grammar review together and have a quick-write response to a given prompt...always high-interest and based on student's opinions and personal experiences. Then, of course we share and discuss the response together! My lessons are based on state standards for literary and informational texts. I focus on teaching reading strategies to use before, during, and after reading a text. I dig down deep into vocabulary, understanding word meanings, and using context clues. My lessons are broken down into standards. I teach how to find the main idea and supporting details of a text, identify the theme or life lesson of a text, story elements (characters, setting, plot), summarizing, making inferences, text structure, point of view, and comparing and contrasting similar texts. Did I mention I LOVE reading? After the main instruction of the lesson, I enjoy integrating a review activity, escape room, or task card activity to provide an "online" hands-on experience. I wrap up my lessons with a question and answer opportunity and discuss the answer to our target question.
