About Katherine
I am a dedicated teacher of young children who has a passionate desire to make a difference in the lives of all the children I teach. That being said, I am committed to making learning joyful and engaging so that every child I have taught will find learning to be a joyful adventure. Hence, my main goal is to create lifetime learners. In addition, I am very passionate about language and literacy. Specifically, I feel that literacy (Reading) is foundational to learning and that a child who develops the Reading habit will naturally become a lifetime learner.
Equally important, I enjoy teaching children because I respect children as people who are intelligent and thrive in an inquiry-based, hands-on, minds-on learning environment. By the same token, I strongly believe that every child can learn. This conviction is why I desire to tutor small groups and individual children. Hopefully, I will give them the confidence to learn and develop to their full potential.

I am a compassionate teacher of young children. I consider myself a coach and mentor to our youngest children. My teaching method is developmentally appropriate wherein I plan and implement a hands-on, minds-on approach to my lessons, because I feel that children learn best when they are actively involved in their own learning. Therefore, I shall describe a typical lesson plan of mine in the paragraphs below.
Making Words with Magnetic Letters
Lesson geared towards Preschool and Kindergarten level aged children
Objective: Students will (1) hone their phonemic awareness skills by making words using Magnetic letters and by decoding the letters/sounds in the created word (2) by engaging in the tactile experience of placing groups of letters together on a magnetic surface, children will learn that words are a group of letters grouped in a phonetic manner. These letters will be arranged in a consonant/vowel format.
Also, the teacher will have picked out other letters, in a vowel/consonant format, before teaching the lesson.
Next, the teacher will show the children a magnetic cookie sheet with magnetic letters randomly arranged on said cookie sheet
The teacher will, then, model how to specifically arrange the letters (consonants and vowels) into groups which are known as words.
After which, the teacher will proceed to decode the letters of the arranged group (i.e. /f/a/n/ spells fan).
The teacher will, then, have children practice decoding the letters of her arranged word.
This procedure will be repeated until the teacher has used all the letters
As an assessment: The teacher will have the students use their own plastic letters to arrange their own words
