About Margin
I graduated from Haverford College with a double major in mathematics and music. My mathematics studies focused on theoretical math, and I also took two education courses, one of them focused on math and science pedagogy. In the summer of 2021, I took four online courses through Budapest Semesters in Math Education that explored Hungarian methods of teaching math. I'm both analytical and creative and believe that math can be fun for anyone, so long as we find the right approach. Prior to college, I was an advanced math student who took AP Calculus BC and scored a 5 on the exam as a 10th grader. In middle school, I participated in MathCounts, making it to state level in both 7th and 8th grade and placing 3rd at county level in 8th grade. In high school, I attended the five-week summer intensive MathILy, where advanced high school students learn college-level math in a creative and interactive way. I also scored 800 on the math section of the SAT and 1590 overall, without attending any test-prep class. Outside of math, some things I like are composing and performing music, reading about psychology, and practicing meditation (though I'm still quite a novice at that one!).

My approach to math tutoring emphasizes problem-solving, as it not only applies to math class, but also to life in general. I am eager to work both with students who need support to keep up with schoolwork and with students who desire a greater challenge.
Everyone has different goals, so I tailor lessons to the student. But generally, I focus on supporting the student in their school classes first, and then if they are interested, I like to teach the fundamentals of subjects such as combinatorics and logic, which usually appear at the very end of the secondary school curriculum, if at all. Especially with younger students, enrichment activities often include mathematical games such as those featured in Ben Orlin's Math Games with Bad Drawings
I have helped one student earn a 95% on a test after several months of failing grades, and I have coached others in preparing for AP exams and for skipping grade levels in math.
