About Marissa
I am a dedicated and passionate educator committed to helping students build both confidence and mastery in their learning. With experience teaching high school science, I specialize in breaking down complex concepts into clear, manageable steps while maintaining high academic expectations. My classroom and tutoring experience have strengthened my ability to support diverse learners, including students who need additional scaffolding, structured guidance, or help rebuilding academic confidence.
I believe every student is capable of success when given the right support. My approach combines clear direct instruction, guided practice, and opportunities for students to explain their thinking so they develop true understanding—not just memorization. I create a supportive, professional learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and taking academic risks.
Families and students can expect consistency, organization, and strong communication. I take pride in being reliable, prepared, and responsive to individual student needs. My goal is not only to improve grades, but to help students become independent, confident learners who feel capable of tackling challenging material on their own.

My Approach as a Tutor
My approach to tutoring is student-centered, supportive, and focused on building deep understanding rather than memorization. I believe students learn best when they are actively engaged in the material, so I use questioning, modeling, guided practice, and real-world connections to help concepts make sense. I break complex topics into manageable steps, check for understanding frequently, and adjust my instruction based on the student’s needs. I also incorporate direct instruction when necessary to clarify foundational concepts, followed by practice where students explain their thinking to strengthen mastery and confidence.
A Typical Lesson Plan
A typical tutoring session begins with a quick review of prior learning or homework to identify misconceptions. Next, I introduce the main concept using clear explanations, visuals, and examples. We then work through guided practice together, gradually releasing responsibility to the student. I include application problems or higher-level thinking questions to deepen understanding. The session ends with a summary of key points and a short check for understanding to ensure the student can independently explain the concept.
What Sets Me Apart
What sets me apart as a tutor is my ability to balance patience with high expectations. I create a comfortable environment where students feel safe asking questions, but I also challenge them to think critically and articulate their reasoning. My background in structured, inquiry-based curriculum allows me to help students not only solve problems but truly understand the “why” behind the content. I focus on building both academic skills and confidence.
Who the Lessons Are For
My lessons are designed for middle school and high school students, particularly in science (life science, biology, genetics, evolution) and general academic support. I work well with students who need additional scaffolding, English language learners, and students who benefit from structured guidance and clear explanations. I also support students preparing for assessments who need help strengthening content knowledge and problem-solving skills.
